MIXTAPE: WE OOZE
L.A. RECORD contributor Keenan Marshall Keller has assembled this brain-straining mixtape of local and touring bands that will mostly be performing at the perfectly named WE OOZE festival tomorrow and Saturday at Show Cave‘s new location. Many of these bands have left particularly impressive snail trails across the pages of L.A. RECORD and all of them are American treasures. Fire when ready, Keenan:
On March 26th & 27th Drippy Bone Books (an art zine & comix publisher w/ hubs in Amsterdam, Denver, Los Angeles) presents WE OOZE: a two night event of subterranean music, art, and zines at Show Cave Night Gallery in Eagle Rock. Featuring live performances on Friday by the harbingers of gloo-wave doom Wizzard Sleeve, L.A.’s longstanding bad-asses the Lamps, the outrageously twisted Francis Harold and the Holograms, Denver’s “witch-house” darlings Modern Witch and the one and only a capella massacre that is IMAGINE “the” BAND with a DJ set by the enigmatic duo SPIDER. Saturday brings us the undeniable force of the Spits as well as L.A.’s own Mikki and the Mauses and an encore performance by IMAGINE ”the” BAND! Below are select cuts from the bands appearing over the course of these two nights.
1. Wizzard Sleeve “Invisible City”
Wizzard Sleeve are the end of your happy good times and the start of a new atrocious standard in head-expanding zooed-out-and-shut-in true punk weirdness!
2. The Spits “Rip up the Streets”
The unstoppable carriers of the touch for true fuckin’ rock—if ya don’t know, I don’t know what to tell you. I guess you just gotta come and see. The best band there is.
3. The Lamps “Eliseo”
Every band’s favorite band. They are abrasive, loud and shocking. In other words, they are great.
4. Static Static “Capsize”
L.A.’s most under rated band. Gloo-wave killers of complacency—dance, you bitches, dance!
5. Modern Witch “Can’t Live in the Living Room”
Denver’s Modern Witch are writing new passages in the tomes of the ancients. You will dance, you will shiver and you might even see shit.
6. SPIDER “Sweepin’ the Ruins”
Heavy synth-punk from the hidden caverns of your darkest dreams.
7. Mikki and the Mauses “Male Problem”
Screaming dad-hating madness! Tight as fuck live—they are a blast!
8. IMAGINE ”the” BAND
A one-man rat pack a capella massacre. Like nothing you’ve ever seen before … and you’ve seen a lot.
9. Wizzard Sleeve “Chrome Intensifier”
Another deep and brooding slimy track from Alabama’s gods of Gloo-wave.
10. Francis Harold and the Holograms “Glitter Girls”
The musical equivalent of a rat, cat and dog trapped in a burlap sack and thrown in the river … No one gets out alive and we like it that way.
