MURDER CITY DEVILS @ THE OBSERVATORY

It’s been a few years since The Murder City Devils have played in Southern California and they haven’t skipped a beat. Bringing with them Seattle’s The Intelligence who started off the show with their angular punk band sound and tunes from their 10th album, Un-Psychedelic in Peavy City. Music lovers bopped along to Lars Finberg and company, which includes another former Thee Oh Sees’ member, Petey Dammit.
MCD started their high energy set with “Press Gang” off of their 3rd album on Sub Pop In Name and Blood and would continue to pull audience approved hits throughout their set. Vocalist Spencer Moody spent half of the set on stage and the other half in the crowd as their set hit a climax as we sang along to their song “Idle Hands,” during at which time the keyboard stand collapsed and Matthew Schwartz, never missing a beat, hit all of the notes like the pro he is. As the MCD moved the crowd through the set, “Spencer we love you” could be heard as they ripped into another fan favorite “Rum To Whiskey.” MCD proved their importance as fans exited with their tour shirts with the quote “Spent Vacation at the Murder City Devils.” Just another summer in the OC.
