Before wrapping up his US tour at SXSW, former Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes entertained fans at the Echo with selections from his respected solo career that included new songs off the upcoming release, World’s Strongest Man.

Known for his haughty, youthful exuberance during the Supergrass years, the solo material allows Coombes to meditate carefully on soaring melodies and intricate song structures. The yearning of “Buffalo” and “The Girl Who Fell to Earth” showcase these qualities beautifully, with the latter being dedicated to the late Stephen Hawking.

The 70 minute set concluded with a well-known classic, the Supergrass hit “Caught By the Fuzz” complete with audience participation.

The quirky Piney Gir opened the night with a charming set of songs with her keyboard and a little help with some guitar accompaniment.
