Before his party at Desert Daze, Dan Deacon threw quite the soiree the eve beforehand at The Echoplex. Kicking off the party was Prince Rama – two sisters from Brooklyn that are so wonderfully strange and fun that you can’t help but get sucked into the whimsical adventure they create. The Deacon then saved us all. In between the intoxicating and energetic noise coming out of his equipment set atop a suitcase, he initiated a dance competition and a game where he splits the crowd in half, gives each a leader and each half must follow the actions of their leader. It’s a great way to get the crowd not just into the music, but gives them the opportunity to experience the show with each other. He also requested that each person in the crowd grab the hand of the person next to you and then went into a 2 minute speech aimed to build empathy and kindness towards your fellow concertgoer and it worked. It’s one thing for a guy with a bunch of electronic equipment to just go out on stage and do his thing, but Dan Deacon makes it an experience and that’s what makes his shows worth going to every single time.
