VIDEO PREMIERE: BIG DEBBIE “ELECTRIC WATER”
Big Debbie likes to look for the very edge of things, whether during a childhood in the U.S.S.R. absorbing banned new wave music or seeking artistic revelation in punk and noise music in the Bay Area before Big Tech’s wrecking spree. New video “Electric Water”—two things you mix together if you want to get a shock—is right on the line where Suicide and John Carpenter meet. (Something astronomers might call the terminator—fitting?)
It’s future primitive with pirate tech, realized in 1988-style pixel zig-zags by Caro Yagjian and Ursula Yashenko, resurrecting the aesthetic of those Amiga 500 video demos that bubbled up from the proto-Internet underground in the years before the wall came down. Call it a scanner’s-eye-view of the human organism, cut to a computerized rhythm and glowing with a little occult energy, too. There’s New Romantic and then there’s Neuromantic—Big Debbie can do one, the other or both at once. “Electric Water” is just part of the new Big Debbie tape, and Debbie will be DJing alongside Lydia Lunch and many more subterranean luminaries this Sunday afternoon at Akbar.
