VIDEO PREMIERE: TONY “MY NAME IS TONY”

February 28th, 2020 | News

It’s almost 11 AM so it’s probably time to behold the sum total of one man’s existence in just under five minutes. Good thing Tony (Infante, also of the Squids, Crystales, this collab with another notable local Tony) is here with his solo-est of solo projects Tony and a homemade video that displays his life from the moment he was born (sourced from VHS) to … well, to the minute he finished filming the video.

Like Crystales, this song is swimming in shoegaze-y noise and atmosphere, but there’s some of Brian Wilson in here too, although not at all in the way Jesus and Mary Chain put those things together. “My Name Is Tony” has a little of that post-Pet Sounds melancholy instead—maybe not quite “Til I Die,” but you can’t fast-forward through the entire record of someone’s time on the planet without thinking a little about what it all means.

Says Tony: “‘My Name Is Tony’ was written and recorded in 2019 in my bedroom DIY studio, featuring Gabe Diaz on drums and Tyler Juarez aka Judy Gloom on bass and Casiotone. It’s about how everyone in the world is named Tony. The video came together after I digitized years of old home movies, scrubbed through footage of my entire life and cut it down to 4 1/2 minutes— a surreal, embarrassing, hilarious, cringe-y, emotional, out-of-body-at-my-own-funeral-while-simultaneously-being-born-again weird experience.”
