VIDEO PREMIERE: ALIEK “WHAT YOU LIKE”
Sister Mary Clarence, this is steamy! Based in whatever neighborhood Akbar is in, R&B / Pop / Sexy Sad artist Aliek (uh-lie-eck) has been backing up some of L.A.’s finest artists for years. And now they’re leaping from the choir pew to the pulpit with this cheeky, smart and sultry video about a pop star and a lusty nun. (The lustiest, it seems. )
Aliek mixes the sacred with the propane to create a lit liturgical love song with sonic nods to Sade, Jessie Ware, Emily King and KING. The distant, yearning synths, the processed vocals, the barely-restrained heat: these elements together form an irresistible come-on that would feel at home on Dirty Mind. Says Aliek:
“I’m not inherently smooth or cool—just ask my partner of nine years. So I wrote ‘What You Like’ in order to live out that fantasy of being extremely confident and saying what is on my mind.
I imagined seeing my fiancé for the first time and going right up to her and confidently picking her up, as opposed to waiting four years to even tell her how I feel. This song is about self-empowerment and taking risks, and I hope it inspires listeners to do just that … and dance in their car. “
Look out for sure-to-be-sultry new music in April. Until then, nothing wrong with looping this until Christ’s inevitable return. Full video credits below!
