VIDEO PREMIERE: BELLY BELT “BASKETBALL FOREVER”
If you’ve ever been to a Belly Belt show, you’ve felt the moment—the moment when everyone is staring at the stage, getting it, but not entirely sure what they’re getting. It’s like watching Laurie Anderson or Andy Kaufman: perplexing and wry and sophisticated and unabashed.
Her video for ‘Basketball’ is the zenith (so far) of an entrancing music video canon. It also has … real … crossover appeal. Pun notwithstanding, it’s endlessly catchy, built on a lyrical ostinato that’s both unaffected and ingenious.
The video is no slouch, either, a meticulously done groundhogs-day where time moves forward but the shots stay the same until the beguiling finish, a slam dunk if there ever was one.
Belly Belt has already signed her name in the book of L.A.’s most esoteric artists, spiritually linked to Gianna Gianna and maybe like, one other performer. She’s divine.
In her words: “I have finished the best music video I ever created.”
It’s not just the best video she’s created—it’s one of the best of the year, full stop. Check it out, you goober.
