L.A.’s Frankie and the Witch Fingers might have started as a garage rock band, but now they’ve left the garage—and this rock we call home!—behind and transformed into a faster-than-light prog-punk generation ship. (You know: the kind of sci-fi spacecraft that’s designed to fly into the unknown forever.) This pocket epic “I Am / Underneath You” splits in half after a tight minute or two of psychedelic swagger and reveals itself as the starchild of Can’s “Mother Sky” before setting off on a headswirling journey toward an instrumental singularity. The hypervisual video by Joshua Bruce is a kaleidoscope of claymation kaiju, set in a dimension where nothing is solid and nothing ever sits still. Forget headphones—if you’ve got a VR headset, this is the time to use it. Frankie and Co. put this out today to alert the world that they’ve just smashed out a new pressing of their recent ZAM full-length (reviewed here) to meet (justified!) fan demand.
