TRACK PREMIERE: VAGUESS “LOOKING FOR GOD”
Every time Vinny Earley and his band-slash-autobiography Vaguess put out something new, it’s like unexpectedly running into an old friend on the street—one of those times when you only get a few minutes to exchange why you’re looking the worse/the better for wear before the gravity of the day pulls you both away. Now we live in a society where we have to do all that virtually, but that works for Vaguess still: whether in person or pixels, there’s something about Earley’s songs that slashes through any amount of distance.
“Looking For God” is the second single from Earley’s self-played/recorded/mixed album Guest List To Heaven, with the first featuring Staz from the Paranoyds here. It comes in one of his favorite forms, which is fast ‘n’ loose rock ‘n’ roll like the angry young Replacements—the Sorry Ma and Stink stuff—with some of Nikki Sudden Jacobites-style desperate recklessness. You get it: rock like you’re on the run from something. Says Earley:
“’Looking for God’” is a light-hearted song about having fun with your friends in the spring time, which is something I think we can all remember very fondly. Guest List to Heaven is an album that is half-full of vaguely religious themes, purely by accident—the other half being a not-so-vague rehashing of my most current failures. Stay safe everyone!”
There you go—keep all that in mind as you dive into the lyrics, maybe from the top side of a bottle of something. Vaguess’ full Guest List To Heaven comes out tomorrow digitally, the third album in as many weeks from Earley’s ReFry label. First was Les Posters, whose share wildman drummer Danny Kendrick with Guest List, and second was Scam Likely, a project with Kevin’s Kimi Recor. (“Maybe there’s some way of tying this all in, maybe not,” says Earley. “I’m just laying all the stats out there.”) Guest List will be available Friday in all the usual spots where pixels get pushed, but here’s a good place to start, and a good place to grab the rest of the ReFry-ography while you’re there.
