Jess Joy's "Finally Blooming" is a song that's all acrobatics and loop-de-loops, or if you want to use the metaphor from the song itself, it's one of those endlessly climbing twisting flowering vines that start from nothing and grow so wild and fast they turn whole buildings into vertical gardens. Jess Joy‘s “Finally Blooming” is a song that’s all acrobatics and loop-de-loops, or if you want to use the metaphor from the song itself, it’s one of those endlessly climbing twisting flowering vines that start from nothing and grow so wild and fast they turn whole buildings into vertical gardens. Joy wrote “Blooming” to music by drummer/composer Mike Byrne—a former Smashing Pumpkin who also backed Sky Saxon of the Seeds, interviewed here—to process tumult personal and political, including both the 2016 election and the dissolution of her band Moon Honey (reviewed here), and after plenty of study and introspection she was able to find solid ground and grow. As she explains:

“This song is not about romantic love—it is about safety and the first time I consciously let a man into my home while I was alone with the sole intention of friendship. Prior to that, I’m ashamed to say I wasn’t able to trust or be vulnerable with cis men. After the 2016 election I was irate … triggered like so many of us. It leaked into my personal life and coincided with the breakdown of my closest relationships. I felt unsafe and out of control, and it led to seven months of total isolation in Claremont to study mime, an art practice which thankfully didn’t require me to speak. ‘Finally Blooming’ was the discovery of a space safe enough to heal and open my heart to trust.”

“Finally Blooming” is advance notice of an album due out next year, and Joy will be performing on Sat., Aug. 17, at 5:50 PM at Little Joy in Echo Park for Echo Park Risinginfo here! Visit Jess Joy here, and full lyrics below.

FINALLY BLOOMING

unexpected
pastel pink budding bloom
undetected
fingers reaching feeling for
the summer moon
the grace
the strength it takes
to push up through
the terror
the anger
the fire
the wound

uncorrupted
by man-made toxicities
unaffected
by made-made masculinity
you
uncovered my emotional truth
you are gentle
but who knew
i am too

finally blooming
thanks for watering me

resurrected
roll back the stone from the tomb
reconnected
now i know
what i’m here to do
you
uncovered my emotional truth
you are gentle
and
i am too

finally blooming
thanks for
thank you
thanks for respecting
i mean
thank you for watering me
