M.A.D. is Costa Mesa musician Mario Barrios, who plays with Avid Dancer and Gantez and who named his solo project after the concept that only the possibility of total nuclear annihilation can lead to peace. (More on this fun idea here.) His new “Everything” is about those times when the bad and the good melt into the same exact thing, and it’s a dreamy—maybe even a fever-dreamy?—song that feels like it’s in freefall, with a guitar melody that finally splits open in the final moments. Turns out that ragged up-all-night mood here is because he stayed up all night to record, says Barrio: “Jacob Summers [Avid Dancer] and I were housesitting in the Hollywood hills behind sunset at a house we later nicknamed ‘Hollywood Death House.’ We slept maybe … 16 hours the four days we were there. The single ‘Everything’ was tracked around midnight to 5 AM on the second night. I wrote the song for my mother a few months before recording the song in L.A.” M.A.D.’s “Everything” is available here now!
