ALBUM PREMIERE: GOD’S CHILDREN ‘MUSIC IS THE ANSWER’
God’s Children are one of the most unjustly underrated bands to come out of East L.A.—with founding vocalists Little Wille G of thee legendary thee Midniters and Lil’ Ray of some equally legendary East L.A. hits, there were a War-meets-Sly Stone-style power-to-the-people outfit that wanted to change the world. And with Alan Flores and Steve Gutierrez, heartbreaker teenage vocalist and first Latina Miss Montebello Lydia Amescua and vocalists Fawn and Stacy Rymal, that’s what they set out to do. Picking up the path set by East L.A. singles like “Chicano Power” and “The Ballad of Cesar Chavez,” God’s Children performed ambitiously diverse music with a political bent that got them to two singles for L.A.’s UNI label, where they were backed in studio by the Wrecking Crew. But due in part to label pressure to become something they weren’t—”They didn’t get what we were trying to do,” says Willie G in the liner notes. “They wanted us to dress a certain way, they wanted to promote us a certain way. We tried to be as cooperative as possible but after awhile we had to say, ‘This isn’t really us.’”—God’s Children fragmented before ever releasing a full-length. But now Minky Records is releasing this complete collection including the unheard outtakes from their Wrecking Crew session and a complete studio session (including a cameo by the Salas Brothers) with backing by the East L.A. Band. (You might recognize two songs from Willie G’s classic “Brown Baby” 45 for Gordo.) Music Is The Answer will be out on CD on Fri., Apr. 13, and on special brown vinyl for Record Store Day on Sat., Apr. 21.
