ALBUM PREMIERE: ELUSIVE “BONSAI TREE”

June 13th, 2019

L.A. producer Elusive has a discography that branches, flowers and digs deep to put down roots, and that's why his newest Bonsai Tree makes so much sense. It's a refinement of everything this instrumental experimentalist does, delivered with the fine detail and mind-boggling complexity that comes only from with tiny tools and colossal amounts of patience. (And much like an actual bonsai tree, it suggests a whole world within its limited physical space.) Bonsai Tree is out Fri., June 14, on Dome of Doom with a show that night at GENR8R's residency at the Del Monte in Venice. (He'll also be at York Manor for Hiding Places with L.A. RECORD alums Kenny Segal and Lealani on June 27—info here and flyer below.)

TRACK PREMIERE: CROWN PLAZA “NO NEED TO SHOUT”

June 13th, 2019

Nima Kazerouni is a person who never has nothing going on, and in that spirit here's a new song by Crown Plaza, one of his many varied off-center pop projects. "No Need To Shout" is a teaser for a long-in-coming full-length produced by Scott Barber of the Barber Shop, as well as a gentle take on what happens when you're feeling like you're spread too thin. Crown Plaza plays tonight at Harvard and Stone with recent premiere-ees Soft Sailors and more, and you can get "No Need To Shout" at their BandCamp for the next month here.

June 12th, 2019

L.A.'s Fell Runner are a cluster of CalArts alums (including L.A. RECORD featurees Gregory Uhlmann and Tim Carr) whose exuberantly experimental indie rock is the kind of music that materializes when every instrument is in an inspired conversation with every other instrument. It's crackling with a stop-start energy that's the sonic equivalent of " ... and you won't believe what happened next!" They start a quick west coast tour tonight but they'll be home for their record release show at the Bootleg on Wed., June 19get tickets here! Full dates below.

TRACK PREMIERE: MIRRORBALL “NATURAL WORLD”

June 6th, 2019

Mirrorball is the duo of vocalist Alexandra Johnstone—formerly of White Dove, enthusiastically reviewed here—and longtime local guitarist Scott Watson, and on "Natural World" they're matching stylishly narcoticized 80s FM AOR production to a melancholy song about uncertainty and confusion. If there's unexplored territory between Fleetwood Mac's best b-sides and Kate Bush at her most celestial, that's where Mirrorball wants to be. "Natural World" is the B-side to Mirrorball's Dangerbird Microdose 7" released last month, which you can get here.

TRACK PREMIERE: SOFT SAILORS “WHAT WE LIVE”

June 4th, 2019

L.A. musician Geoff Geis has a long and distinguished history: Big Whup, Pizza!, the solo songs that made him something of a SoundCloud sensation and appearances in L.A. RECORD both as subject and contributor. And now that he's "older and presumably wiser," he says, he's got a new outfit called Soft Sailors and this anxious/angsty art-wave track "What We Live."
