Georgia has been giving the greater the California coast a run for our money, and Bazooka proves why: though the band has clearly ticked the same style boxes that bands like Ty Segall and White Fence do (surf, garage, G.G. Allin, a brief nod to psych), here it winds up sounding a lot harder, not faster but like a PILEDRIVER, with major tones of Mexican and Peruvian sixties madmen like Los Saicos and El Mongols–and that’s without ever singing a word of Spanish! In fact, perhaps the best tune on here is “Tingle,” which doesn’t have words until over halfway through the song. The chords are maxed out, like a garage Sonic Youth, percolating background spaciness abound, and on “Monkey Town,” the reverb coils seem to be spitting like water, like Colorado’s 60s surf veterans the Astronauts, but also like a sneering challenge! The game is afoot.
