Soft-spoken, somber, and piano-plinky, this debut from Ben Heywood of L.A.’s Summer Darling has some serious cold-shouldered fragility to it, a lot like if Flaming Lips did an album of all sad songs–especially considering that the whole deal is a concept piece where each song is a little short story about the aftermath of an ecology-driven war that broke up the United States. Still not sold? Then just check out the broken analog synth sounds that serve as backdrop to some of these almost Morricone anthems–this rock opera just might count as freak folk.
