TUESDAY, NOV. 20:
Though I’m hesitant to admit this, there was a time when I satisfied my Van Halen cravings at Relay For Life events. Raising awareness was great, but it broke my heart that in order to hear Van Halen songs played live I had to think about cancer while listening to a tribute band called “Eruption.” Seriously, they were the only game in town. Until now. Apparently, this new Van Halen reunion was spurred on by Eddie’s son, Wolfgang, and his desire to play bass in the band (sorry Michael Anthony fans, sacrifices must made) and, just maybe, David Lee Roth’s dwindling bank accounts. Whatever the specifics, the resurrection of one of L.A.’s biggest rock bands is incalculably exciting. If it all works out, this might be the biggest year in rock reunions in recent memory, what with Zeppelin playing this month (with Bonham’s son playing the part of thunder-bringer). Man, Satan must really be happy about this turn of events. (GG)
