TUESDAY, SEPT. 18:

The first Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album was one of those mythic Internet success stories in pop music, not unlike the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot brouhaha a few years prior. It gave many people a chance to channel their frustrations at record companies obsessed with mediocrity and lawsuits against teenagers while listening to an indie band who made a uniquely weird and fun album. Sophomore effort Some Loud Thunder didn’t quite get the same reception, maybe because reviewers had exhausted themselves on the CYHSY backstory and much they had nothing left to say. That’s a shame, too, because the same winning formula—whiny vocals, lots of fill-in synths, and quirkiness set to overdrive—were at work again on an album almost as solid as the first. Songs like “Satan Said Dance” continue the familiar yet new sound that CYHSY are known for in an indie dance song more bizarre than the title would even make you believe. Alec Ounsworths’ Violent Femmes-meets-Talking Heads impression is still giddy and jubilant, and is clearly not going to win any singing awards any time soon. So you’d be a fool to miss this. (GG)
