TUESDAY, AUGUST 14:

Film School found its new bassist by placing the same ad that the Pixies had used to recruit Kim Deal: “Looking for someone into Husker Du and Peter, Paul & Mary.” Don’t expect blasts of noisy guitar rock or gossip about someone who’s into field hockey players, though. With bassist and vocalist Lorelei Plotczyk, drummer James Smith, guitarist Dave Dupuis, longtime keyboardist Jason Ruck, and founder and frontman Greg Bertens, the new Film School lineup expands on the group’s signature moody atmospherics and shimmering melodies for their upcoming full-length Hideout. But the road to world domination—from a duo playing to a handful of web coders in late-’90s San Francisco to a five-piece signed to indie bigwigs Beggars Banquet—has had some bumps (notably, someone stole all of the band’s gear in the middle of a tour last year by hotwiring the van and plowing it straight through the locked gate of a motel parking lot). But with Hideout, Film School is ready for a fresh start. Featuring guest appearances by members of My Bloody Valentine, Timonium, and Snow Patrol, the album runs the emotional gamut from deluded obsession (“Dear Me”) to heartbreak (“Two Kinds”) to seething rage (“What I Meant to Say”) and even defiant optimism (“Plots and Plans”), and the richly textured songs, drenched in layers of reverb and loops and floating behind the interplay of male and female singers, promise to be particularly powerful live.
