FRIDAY, JULY 20:
I remember where I was the first time I heard Daydream Nation. It was at my friend’s place and we were drinking and smoking and laughing and joking and doing things that teenagers probably shouldn’t be doing. To be super specific, we were probably listening to Jimi Hendrix right before my friend slipped in the Daydream cassette. I had only recently been introduced to Sonic Youth, having heard and being blown away by Sister, then backtracking to Evol, which was equally great. As we sat there with the black lights on and the smoke blowing, the beautiful guitars that open “Teen Age Riot” came dancing through the speakers and swirling through my mind like nothing I had heard by a modern band. By the time “Silver Rocket” was done, I was proclaiming it to be the best record I ever heard, by the greatest band of all time! Man! Seriously! Since then, Daydream Nation has withstood the test of time and has been chosen as one of the first 200 albums by the Library of Congress to be included in its National Recording Registry, as well as serving as the beginning of ‘90s “indie” music. Without this record, there wouldn’t have been bands like Nirvana and indie music would still just be played on college radio stations. This record—for me and for a whole bunch of people—was the beginning of everything. (ATR)
