THURSDAY, JULY 19:
Say what you will about Ryan Adams—the guy’s a tenacious bastard. Since steering through a barrage of praise and denunciation from the critical community, putting out five or ten records in about a year, and even using his website to introduce his hilariously bad space rap about the Annunaki, he’s fared pretty well. Granted, he isn’t the most innovative artist, choosing to update a Laurel Canyon rock-meets-country/folk aesthetic, but he’s produced some fine songs since Whiskeytown went defunct. There have been groaner songs—sometimes whole groaner albums—but his work ethic and musical output is admirable. If you’re already a fan, what’s better than not having to wait three or four years before a new album comes out? Adams puts out a new CD every six to eight weeks. Can his concert can still bring the emotional drama now that the whole Ryan Adams/Byran Adams Summer of ‘69 spat is long since over? Didn’t somebody get punched over that? (GG)
