THURSDAY, JULY 19:
For every applied-from-without batch of music that gives a city its identity like grunge did in Seattle in the ‘90s, there is a similar movement like the Manchester scene that began in England in the late ‘80s. That scene, like New York City in the ‘70s, developed and evolved because of the social interactions those bands had together. Similar to that, the music scene in Long Beach, with a diverse lineup of bands including Greater California, the Soft Hands and ForceField On, is tied together right now by Fingerprints, the three or four venues in the city where these bands play, and the creativity that seems to be buzzing around the city for all of its artists. Elvin Estela (Nobody) and Ikey Owens have been responsible for keeping the Long Beach music scene on the map, long after Sublime and Snoop first won attention a decade ago, through a series of personal and side projects such as Estella’s solo records and collaborations with the Mystic Chords of Memory and Owens’ work with Mars Volta and Look Daggers. Together, they typify what’s going on in Long Beach right now. Performing in what could be called their natural habitat, both will showcase their latest incarnations tonight: Estela’s fantastic Blank Blue, which features Niki Randa on vocals, and Owens’ equally tight Free Moral Agents. If you were waiting for the right time to see either, it’s tonight. (ATR)
