SATURDAY, JUNE 9: You fancy yourself a discerning music fan—one who’s in the know about the latest and greatest sounds coming up from the street, right? Well, so does every kid with a faux mullet and a pair of skin-tight big-brand jeans. Now, how would you like to fancy yourself something really fancy, like a patron of the arts? All you have to do is attend a soiree (I know, easy, right?) this weekend to celebrate the release of Penny Ante book #2, the second in a series of eclectic arts journals that showcase the creativity of some of L.A.’s most inventive artists, writers, musicians, and independent thinkers. The text/art journals are only published once a year, and contributors are given total freedom to make their page their very own in the wildest and most evocative way they can. This year’s volume includes some big guns, like Bill Callahan (Smog), Lene Lovich, Jennifer Herrerma (RTX), Sam Coomes (Quasi), and members of Lavender Diamond, Entrance, Spindrift, and The Tyde. Not to mention hot visual artists like Peter Wu, Mariano Chavez, and Christina Mack. Admission to the party includes a copy of the book. And there’ll be live music by many of the contributors, including Moris Tepper, Qui, RTX, and Spindrift. Plus, Ariel Pink and DJ sets by cover artist David Yates of Fast Friends Inc., Matt Fishbeck of Holy Shit, NC Steele, and DJ Dirt Reynolds. What could be better than a hot party thrown by cool kids with something to say? Exactly. (ST)
