WEDNESDAY, MAY 2: Since 1977, pigeon-toed Mr. MacManus has been churning out some of the most inventive songwriting and clever lyricism in pop music. His first record, littered with anger and obsession, is one of the most consistent and entertaining debuts of its time. I don’t know anyone else with the balls to use “anesthetize” or “tarmacadam” in a song. With his bids for “artistic credibility” hopefully behind him (less ballets, more bombast!), Elvis has been rocking out again with most of the Attractions for the last five years or so, playing to other fifty-year-olds who could have heard his inimitable British twang for pocket change 25 years ago. The suits probably get pressed a little more often, and it’s likely been a while since Declan slept on a floor, but that doesn’t make “Pump It Up” any less fantastic. Just real fucking expensive.
