When it was her turn to drive carpool, we were subjected to lectures extolling the virtues of Willie’s music and lustrous braids. In 1996 her family van was broken into; her 8-track player and Willie Nelson 8-track tapes were the only articles missing. Crying out Willie’s name, she slumped against the van and didn’t speak for a week.
