Tom Jones is still one stylish devil. The tight Technicolor pantsuits and billowing shirts of yore have given way to a more contemporary all black ensemble. Not to worry, though. As soon as the initially staid-looking Jones broke into his signature sexy dance moves, coat flaps flew aside to reveal a sassy crimson silk lining and a panel of something sparkly on either side of the buttons running down his sheer black shirt. The crowd at the Greek let the balmy, wildfire-smoked night air propel them into a sweaty, panty-hurling trance that lasted the entirety of Jones’ two hour-plus set.

Jones played all the sometimes kitschy classics the crowd of 25-70 year-olds was itching for, like “Delilah,” “What’s New Pussycat?,” “It’s Not Unusual,” and “She’s A Lady,” complete with a squatting pelvic thrust to the line “She knows just how to please me.” He also gave several covers the Tom Jones treatment, ranging from Prince’s “Kiss” to Howlin’ Wolf to Shocking Blue’s “Venus.” The song that broke the hysteria flood gates and triggered a waterfall of panties also happened to be a cover, that of one Earl Thomas, called “Git Me Some;” a Let’s Fuck anthem where the protagonist explains to his ladyfriend that he doesn’t need any of that romance junk, just some good old fashioned, lusty nighttime boot-knocking.

Jones managed to cater to his “Sex Bomb” image while still having a sense of humor about it, and decades of performing experience lent him a confidence and playfulness on stage that made the show an almost absurdly joyful experience. People filtered out with huge smiles that couldn’t be dimmed by the less-than-ideal stacked parking situation at the Greek. Here’s hoping that Jones comes back to say “Hello” next time he swings through Vegas and gives us a little of that hip gyration that looks so gooood on him.
