How the genius cover of the Tweak Bird single is able to contain the explosive two songs tucked within, I know not—it’s a magical testament to the currents of the cosmos that converged to create Caleb and Ashton, the electrifying Bird brother duo. It’s all quite raunchy and primitive: meaty guitar and heavy drums fit for any Melvins geek with harmonies that float eerily above that dense foundation. The overall experience of this first single is not unlike my friend Texas Troy’s surprise birthday visit to the infamous Chicken Ranch. Once inside Caleb and Ashton’s lair, you will get a once-over with a hand-held STD detector, and though you may request a spanking, you’ll be beat silly by a wire hanger. On the “Spaceships” trip, Caleb seems to channel Rush’s Geddy Lee, but the song thankfully sounds nothing like Rush—instead, it contains all of the elements that made labels like AmRep, Man’s Ruin and Ipecac such reputable sources for aural stimulation. Caleb makes me want to offer my body in sacrifice to their twisted Creator. Beam me up, Birdies!
