The club was packed and the crowd enthusiastic, mirroring the never-failing energy of singer and band-founder John Schmersal. Right now would be a great time to remember one of his odd quips about the crappy parking situation—but I’m sure you can imagine. Nevertheless, the place was packed and I would say that the show was worth the mile walk from my car. Enon played a considerable amount of new material, having recently released a new record last October. The band has been going at it for almost ten years now and there’s still no sign of slowing down, as they’ve reached a level of success that most indie bands can only dream up. But more importantly, they love what they do—and you can tell when you see them live. With so many bands crowding the market lately, I jumped at the opportunity to see this show, especially since Mellowdrone was opening. I felt sorry to see only a handful of people dancing their asses off (I admit that I was one of them)—I can’t see how they got through the show without getting their groove on at least a little bit. Still, that wasn’t an indicator of Enon’s ability to rock out. The energy definitely mounted when they started the song “Natural Disasters,” an old favorite they failed to play at the Echo last November. Their encore was a pleasant surprise and great way to end the evening, with Toko Yasuda on the keyboard and Schmersal on bass for “In This City.” I can’t say I’ve ever been disappointed by an Enon performance and Friday night’s show was no different.
