Question: If a bus filled with the Flying Burrito Brothers is headed North by Northeast and a VW Van filled with the Beach Boys is headed South by Southwest and the Beatles fly over in a yellow submarine to ensure that the guys from Brian Jonestown Massacre stopped to give everyone a lift, well, what happens next? The answer is The Fling, a god damned gift from heaven. Holy fucking rock geniuses, people! It’s truly something amazing when a band can invoke the spirit of such absolute rock gods and yet completely own their own sound, their own groove. The Fling does so with a seeming ease and grace, laying down their songs with a command and ferocity tightly leashed by their musical passion and ability. Releasing their EP at the Prospector last Thursday, The Fling put on an absolutely mind-blowing show. Topping it all off, The Commotions started things rolling with a completely killer set. Part Northern soul, part showtune, part dancy-punk all with a sit-in drummer that played like an old-school reggae rhythmist. The Commotions were the cherry on the amazingly delicious rock sundae named The Fling.
