SUNDAY, JULY 29:

Proud to say that this publication’s endeavor into the world of concert promoting went better than imagined. Unusually smooth door entrance, good attendance, great bands, and set times that actually adhered to those advertised left me wondering if these kids had thrown shows like this before. Darker my Love came correct, finally having established a sonic personality for themselves. They’re stuck in London somewhere between 1969 and 1995, channeling the spirit of both Ian Brown/Stone Roses and early Pink Floyd (maracas included!). For a local band, DML don’t play in town that often, which actually works in their favor by making the time between local showings a little more special than some of their contemporaries. On this night, they were joined onstage by a keyboard player that no one could hear thanks to the walloping drums and lush wall of sound provided by dual guitars. Good job, L.A. RECORD readers and staff—everyone pat yourselves on the back, and keep on hoping the next official L.A. RECORD event goes as well as this one. (LF)
