FRIDAY, JUNE 29:
One only needs to look at what remains of the once-thriving Los Angeles ’60s garage/punk scene from earlier in the decade to be reminded that cocaine and rum do not make people age well. It was an ugly crowd indeed at the Andre Williams show, and I have a feeling that he wouldn’t want it any other way. Going into a career-spanning set (backed by L.A. veterans the Flash Express, whom I thought were broken up but apparently are not), Mr. Williams seemed still at the top of his game, even at his old, old age. Seeing performers this old just makes me all warm and soft inside because you are looking at a person that has dedicated their life to one sole endeavor. That’s such a delight to see and behold, especially if said performer is actually good at their craft. Sharon Jones is truly amazing and she’s well into her late fifties. James Brown was awesome all the way until he died, and you know Prince will probably be super-duper awesome when he’s 70. After the show, we still felt like dancing, so we drove over to the Punky Reggae night at La Cita which was much to our delights—Faust to Lee Perry? Thanks! (LF)
