SUNDAY MAY 13: Bombastic and spastic and everything fantastic, the Smell last Sunday put on a small community benefit show to honor and help out Wolf Eyes’ Nate’s brother Pete Young, who was badly burned in a fire this past February. Jarrett Silberman of Young People and Skull Sküll opened the evening to a crowd of slightly under 20 people (that headcount, unfortunately, including Smell volunteers and other performers). Obstacle Corpse followed, inducing audience members to insert their fingers into their ears, and No Age followed in the front room, performing a peculiar four-minute-long noisy headfuck to a steady—but still startlingly undersized—circle of people. At some point after being harassed and talked into buying an ungodly amount of merch, I heard Kevin Shield banging away in the back room on a clanky xylophone—and that somehow managed to break out a mini pogo riot in front of the sound stage. Sissy Spacek and Allen Pyle closed out the evening a little after midnight, and if you thought you’d already seen a Poltergeist-house-like implosion at the Smell, you were wrong—this was it.
