THURSDAY, APRIL 19: Seeing a local band in a theater adds a certain amount of pretense and grandiosity. The no-drink minimum and the absence of obnoxious house music at this show meant that the entire atmosphere of the evening’s events was…different. Held within a corner of the Disney Concert Hall, the evening was cleanly divided into portions of` dark and bright; by the time Indian Jewelry took to the stage for their hellish blend of feedbacked psychedelia and video-clip miscellanea, it had become avant-garde performance art—not just another noisy band. Finally, the stage was cleared and audience members thumbed through their programs. With the house lights dimmed and ushers urging stragglers to their seats, Becky Stark led her band to the stage with a small orchestral army. Preparing for the imminent release of Lavender Diamond‘s first full-length album, Imagine Our Love, Stark sang her breathy, operatic tunes over the swelling rise and fall of a one-time-only orchestral arrangement. While most of the songs follow the same anthemic build-up of mantras that Lavender Diamond fans have come to admire from their Cavalry of Light EP, Stark also performed her forthcoming album’s “single”—a a downright finger-snapping delight, “Open Your Heart” finds the band exploring new territory. Though the orchestra was unprepared for the impromptu encore of fan favorite “You Broke My Heart,” Stark encouraged them to play along. With Stark’s voice rising ever higher, the orchestra played rouslingly, caught in the euphoric sincerity of Stark’s voice. It was an ecstatic performance. (AG)
