WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28: Sort of like that old adage about the grass being greener on the other side, there seems to be something about the music being punker across the pond. London’s Black Time made a case for this theory during their set at the Scene on Wednesday night, even without studs or spikes—and in spite of their good manners and bassist Janie Too Bad’s Holly Golightly look. But they were punk all right, a rapid-fire assault of songs about blissfully simple subjects like sleepwalking, mummies and supermarkets which they turned into riotous garage-rock odes to dissatisfaction and unrest. The crowd indulged in a sweaty dance fest and literally begged for more. The trio was happy to oblige, and spirits were high throughout the night. Black Time was clearly thrilled to share the stage with their friends in the San Francisco-based trio the Husbands, with whom they were doing a West Coast tour. The three ladies in the Husbands lived up to their reputation for looking and sounding feisty and fantastic during their set, ambushing the crowd like reform-school girls gone even wilder in their black-leather short shorts and caps. They kept the energy at full throttle—although the crowd had thinned out by the time they played—by sassing the audience, swilling beer, and spitting out girl-group ballads turned inside out and delivered as raw squalls of attitude and fun.
