WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28: The first time I saw The Locust, I ended up at the hospital. Although the gift of my bleeding skull came from a guitar belonging to the Dillinger Escape Plan, images of the Locust were bubbling through my brain as fast as my blood evacuated. The noise, the thrashing, the screaming, the short-shorts, the vomit—it was beautiful. The San Diego freakcore group has alienated audiences, challenged metal-savants, and consistently provided an unbelievably entertaining amalgamation of head-crushing beats and hilarious hyper-musicianship. If I would just hit ctrl + c, I would have an accurate depiction of Daughters, whose amped-up grindcore is much like the Locust minus the mutant keyboards and insectazoid costumes. You’d probably enjoy a nice night of high pitched screaming, Boredoms-eque deconstruction, and fantastically absurd song titles like “Boner X-Ray,” “Pants, Meet Shit,” and “Hyperventilationsystem” if Cattle Decapitation wasn’t there to bring it down a notch. Or maybe even an octave, as their gore-grind-death metal growling barfs out extreme vegetarian manifestos explaining that the only flesh they’ll eat is man-meat. Like sonic peers Cannibal Corpse, they feature well-named tunes like “Bukkake Tsunami” and “Humanure.” Make sure to bring your grandmother and a defibrillator. (DT)
