XL MIDDLETON: THINGS ARE HAPPENING

October 3rd, 2017

XL's lyrics, although still delivered with his characteristic ice-cold confidence, reveal a headspace vexed by paranoia, cynicism and claustrophobia. The desolate cover art—a disheveled bedroom precariously balanced atop a sliver of land—hints at the loneliness he explores on tracks like "Better Friend" and "Look Who's Talkin'."

PREMIERE: BOY DUDE “RAINBOW WATERFALL”

September 25th, 2017

BOY DUDE is producer and omni-instrumentalist Jordan Chini pouring everything he's got into a 4-track and capturing the resulting lightly psychedelic ooze ... as heard here on "Rainbow Waterfall," a happily tranquilizing sci-fi funk chill-out song made for a rest and relaxation session on a pleasure planet far far away. (With just the tiniest hint of "Rock Creek Park" in the melody, too.) This aptly named song and more are available on Boy Dude's Cassette For You, out on cassette but also 12" on Nov. 3 on Hobo Camp ands featuring L.A.'s Zackey Force Funk.

ZACKEY FORCE FUNK: CHROME STEEL TIGER

October 22nd, 2015

Although the classic Minneapolis sound is recognizable throughout CST, the album veers into Gainsbourg territory, flirts with crackly sample-era hip-hop textures and sends the listener away on a pink satin cloud of samples and a promise for peace. Chrome Steel Tiger is a perfect reminder that you don’t have to hit it too hard to hit it right.
