Warning, this video is N.S.F.LUNCH. Unless watching people chew with their mouths open makes you happy—as demonstrated by Doña Nicha, this two brother + 1 cousin +1 neighbor family band grown in Southern California. “Sandwishes” is two swishy guitars and a swoony melody of swirled together words that guide us through a minute and a half long wash of noisy shoe material. The video created by The Great Nordic Swordfights makes eating yucky things a metaphor for love. The family that eats together, and spits on each other, gets its faces melted off together.

My exercise routine is a form of one-person porch soccer that I began after watching L.A. Record writer slash soccer master Shannon Breen do this sort of freestyle dribbling dance aerobics. She was good but skill is less important than (and comes from) doing stuff with the ball to the beat of some music—dribbling the ball in circles or quick ninja-like bursts back and forth across the few feet of space between the door and porch furniture, down the stairs, up the side of the house, kicking it against the wall some, passing the ball between me and myself with olympic caliber endurance and the focused confidence of an assassin in training; more circles.

This one time, I was challenging the white picket fence to try and steal the ball from my feet, and “There Is No Light” came on. Before I knew it, I was scaling walls and pirouetting like a shaolin figure skater, one with the ball. I scraped my shoulder that first time in a place I never scraped before. This song’s limber rhythms stretch and kick at each other just like me and my ball—pun(chline) intended. It’s hopefully one of the many songs that Swedish duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums will play tonight at the Satellite.

The Mayfly Dance is Caan Hamlet, Lani Ware, Mikel Farber, and Tony Peluso, but they were briefly known as The Cervine Furs. They were also a folk band for most of ’09 and ’10, before things took a psychedelic turn. Hamlet (who toured with Devendra Banhart before moving to L.A. from London) and Ware are the main songwriters of the band, the song in this video, “Shivers,” was written by drummer Peluso, of Insect VS Robots, and you might recognize it from a few other bands in town play it, too. The video was filmed by Jeff of Jeffertitti’s Nile at a recent benefit. He filmed it through a prism ornament that happened to be hanging behind the stage. Jeff likes prisms, and he’s filling in for Peluso on drums this Saturday for The Mayfly Dance at the Moon Block Party in Pomona, at 4:45 pm. Lots of people will be getting psychedelic before sunset.
