Something of a Los Angeles vocal supergroup, the Living Sisters are composed of the Bird and the Bee’s Inara George, Lavender Diamond’s Becky Stark and Eleni Mandell’s Eleni Mandell. This is a practiced tribute to the great harmonizers of jazz, early rock ‘n’ roll and country.

During the second song, when the beats went from one of those electronic hyper drum rolls leading into the pounding hook of the next verse, the little, tired girl leapt in the air and landed on my broken pinkie toe—HIGH HEEL FIRST! “OWWW!!” I screamed in agony, and she turned to me and yelled, “YAAAAHHH!, WEEE!” Over the course of the next two songs, I got my poor toe stepped on 4 more times, and I was ready to start stabbing people with my remaining Papermates.

Bowel-rattling bass during the Sneaker Pimps event at The Vanguard may have melted attendees’ brains, rendering them unable to respond to complex stimuli. There doesn’t seem to be another viable explanation for why a room chock full of hip hop (and fancy sneaker) fans stood motionless and looking vaguely confused through a raunchy performance from 88-Keys and a blazing freestyle and several lectures from Wale about how embarrassingly catatonic they were.
