While the coke-fiends out there might miss a bit of the trebly snap, the heightened fidelity actually highlights their most frenetic moments: the stereo is more pronounced, so you hear cool friction in the double-tracked vocals and more Thin Lizzy influence in songs such as “Run the Night.”

NEBULA: HEAVY PSYCH
September 3rd, 2009 · No Comments
Just like you can point to Nirvana’s Bleach and say “THAT was what Sub Pop sounded like,” someday I’ll point to Nebula’s Heavy Psych and tell an inquisitive great-niece that “THIS was Tee Pee Records!” Songs such as “Dream Submarine” shoot for the star-struck wizardry of Hawkwind and Amon Duul II, yet deceptively Satanic sounding songs like “Crown of Thorns” emulate the bombastic bluesy-ness of early Foghat and ZZ Top. And then Nebula pauses ever so slowly over some low power chords a la Sabbath and Pentagram before ripping into some blistering stoner-rock Deep Purple guitar licks.

THE WARLOCKS: THE MIRROR EXPLODES
May 20th, 2009 · 1 Comment

BLACK MATH HORSEMAN: WYLLT

This is an album to listen to in the dark, and to listen to LOUD. By the time you get to the last track, and Timms starts screaming like Cronos from Venom, you’ll realize that while these guys are playing their cards a bit close on their first release, they’ll probably be doing some really original and evil stuff in the years to come.
