THE K-HOLES: SLICK NEW VIDEO, ROUGH SXSW INTERVIEW

April 6th, 2012 · No Comments

Our friend Jane was like a waitress, and when she’d fuck up at work, she’d be like, “Oh, sorry, I was in a K-hole!” And then, we were like, that’s really funny, because no one even talks about K-Holes! That’s like a… gone term. Does anyone even do K? And then our friends asked us to be a one-off month band, and they were like, “Just be something stupid!” And we were like, “We’ll be the fucking K-Holes! That’s really stupid.” And we did it, and then everybody liked it, and they asked if we wanted to play again, and we were like, “Okay …”

SXSW DAY -1: BARE WIRES, HECTOR’S PETS

March 14th, 2012 · No Comments

I had scoured my car for anything remotely contraband. Ian MacKaye himself would have been proud of my Scion xB’s sobriety. And yet I still felt tongue-tied when the Border Patrol officer had me roll down my window at the checkpoint just east of El Paso.

SXSW DAY -2: DEAFHEAVEN, KING TUFF, WHIRR, FEEDING PEOPLE, COSMONAUTS, SAM FLAX

Deschryver’s insistent melee of beats gave the songs a feeling of urgency right out of the gate, as though they’d taken the crescendo at the end of a song by some lame Coldplay-type band and started there, building whole songs around something that felt explosive, hypnotic, and yet grimly final, like watching a tragedy played out over and over again on CNN as you stare, helpless.

THE GORIES: IT JUST FRIES YOUR BRAIN

March 12th, 2012 · 1 Comment

The Gories were ‘primal’ and ‘feral’ and ‘savage’ and all the other words that make an Animal Control officer strap on the special gloves, and they didn’t need anything besides Back From the Grave comps and Thunderbird to chop out a couple dozen songs that sound like they came out of the backwoods solely to hunt for prey. L.A. RECORD is proud to have sucked them in to play our show in Austin this year. This interview by Chris Ziegler.

SXSW DAY -3: KING TUFF, SAM FLAX, FEEDING PEOPLE, COSMONAUTS

March 11th, 2012 · 1 Comment

Sam Flax might have been the most impressive new band on the bill, a post-Hawkwind synthy Numan-wave band with two keyboards, a drum machine, and a couple guitars—and they looked as good as they sounded, with a poncho-clad bassist looking like Ariel Pink’s taller brother, and a blond male guitarist/singer wearing a multi-colored windbreaker and Kim Fowley’s cheek makeup. His female co-singer on keys looked pretty bad-assed too, with a futuristic funnel of hair on top of her head …

Day 4 of SXSW was perhaps the most fun of all, and it began with the most delicious vegan peanut butter cup I’ve ever had. I washed it down with an agave wheat beer at the Spider House, where Norwegian noisers the Megaphonic Thrift rocked me back to the early nineties with their can’t-quite-put-my-finger-on-it nostalgic [...]

KING TUFF: IT’S NOT NORMAL

March 24th, 2011 · 2 Comments

Hold the phone! This is an unscheduled surprise! Discovering that we’re following roughly the same course back from SXSW that King Tuff is taking towards his new home, Los Angeles, we’ve accosted this young man at illegal trainyard shows and Arizona’s The Thing! Tourist trap gift shop to get the real skinny on Burger Records and his time in Witch. This interview by Dan Collins.

Does the phrase “ever loving” evoke a furniture store?  Because for at least two years in a row, Everloving Records has done its SXSW showcase at Design Within Reach, a hip furniture store in Downtown Austin, which has always seemed like a slightly weird place to pack a bunch of drunken music fans into.  Full disclosure: this [...]

When you’re rushing around trying to absorb as many little shows as you can just to be able to say “Yeah, I saw blah dee blah,” you usually end up with the taste of sour beer in your mouth, maybe a few new seven-inches, and emptiness. Your fingers get blistered from texting, and you have [...]
