Handsome Furs are husband-and-wife team Dan Boeckner (also in Wolf Parade) and Alexei Perry and their new album Face Control blends classic rock riffs with a techno beat. They have been to many places you have never heard of. Alexei takes time out from a day at the beach to do this interview. This interview by Tom Child.
KING KHAN AND THE SHRINES @ THE ECHO
June 5th, 2009 · No Comments
King Khan’s set was energetic and explosive as they plowed through their classic ‘60s R’n’B and soul inspired songs. At one point in the set, Khan was offered roses by an adoring fan though he quickly tossed them into the crowd. The most touching moment was when Khan introduced the song “Welfare Bread,” explaining that he and his wife were recently living on welfare until he was swept up by musical popularity; he then thanked the crowd and told them they were the reason he was able to get out of the gutter. By the end of the set, Khan’s band was still rocking at full force, though now fully drenched in sweat, as was the crowd.
THERMALS @ THE TROUBADOUR

The Thermals are one of the rare bands I get really excited about these days. Once I heard they we’re cutting ties with Sub Pop I anxiously checked their webpage every few days to see where and when their new album would come out. It wound up coming out on Kill Rock Stars, and it wound up sounding much more in the pop-punk vein than their previous efforts, but I still love it. Their songs are so catchy and Hutch (vocals, guitar) and Kathy (bass) play with such unabashed joy that their energy cannot help but jump off the stage, and off the record, right into my ears, silencing whatever musical prejudices my snobbish mind will try to throw at it.
THE SHINS @ PALLADIUM

Photographer Lindsey Best visited the Shins show last Sunday and returned with these shots of James Mercer, Dave Hernandez and a brand-new line-up including members of Modest Mouse and the Fruit Bats. Two pages of her work below and our pre-show interview with James Mercer here.
THE VASELINES: I PREFER TO BE IN MY TWENTIES
May 11th, 2009 · 3 Comments
While there are some ‘80s bands that should call it quits and put their leather pants in a museum, there are a few making a natural comeback. If it weren’t for Nirvana, perhaps the Vaselines would have never played again, or maybe it would have taken another decade to revive the Scottish twee-pop band from its slumber. But Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee are back with advice on how to grow up. This interview by Daiana Feuer.

THE SHINS: PAPA, CHANGE MY POO POO DIAPER

The Shins right now are no longer the Shins they used to be—founder James Mercer debuted a new line-up (with members of Modest Mouse and Fruit Bats) last week and will be taking the band from Sub Pop to their own label Aural Apothecary for their next releases. He speaks now about this and Bob Dylan, Heath Ledger and Kermit the Frog, too. This interview by Daiana Feuer.
