The Black Hollies come from the psychedelic state of New Jersey and put chocolate and hot sauce but not crack in their bodies from time to time. They don’t exactly sound like the Shades, the Rovin’ Flames or the Cavemen but they probably have those 45s. Bassist/singer Justin Morey takes a break from the chocolate factory to talk. Once the Jesus Lizard walked the earth unchallenged and primitive tool-using mammals quivered before it. Then in 1999 it broke up. But a deluxe series of remasters on Touch and Go (and an encouraging Scratch Acid reunion) helped resurrect the Jesus Lizard for a fearsome set of shows. Chairlift are from a haunted hotel in Colorado but moved to Brooklyn to pursue music more intensely and to be intensely pursued by people who recognize them from an iPod commercial. Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion was called the best record of 2009 even back in 2008, and as usual the band penetrated that sort of cloudiness to shine light down on everyone who was looking for it.
