Songs like “Push Your Fashion To The Limit” and an inspired cover of Lou Reed’s “Satellite of Love” are perfect for the dance floor or for cozying up to sexy Russian double-agent babes while sipping 16 oz. vodkas. The production—as provided by Eddie Chacon—is meticulous and the shared vocals by Chacon and Sissy Sainte-Marie are campy fun without distracting from the party. Their live shows tend to rely on video backdrops but Bolshevik Disco definitely stands on its songs. I like it a lot better than last year’s electronic bubblegum poop by MGMT—which received so much airplay, it could almost be considered propaganda.

INFECTED MUSHROOM @ VANGUARD
July 22nd, 2009 · 1 Comment
During the second song, when the beats went from one of those electronic hyper drum rolls leading into the pounding hook of the next verse, the little, tired girl leapt in the air and landed on my broken pinkie toe—HIGH HEEL FIRST! “OWWW!!” I screamed in agony, and she turned to me and yelled, “YAAAAHHH!, WEEE!” Over the course of the next two songs, I got my poor toe stepped on 4 more times, and I was ready to start stabbing people with my remaining Papermates.

SKID ROW KARAOKE
May 19th, 2009 · 8 Comments
Every Wednesday evening in the heart of Los Angeles’ Skid Row, a downtown church hosts Skid Row Karaoke as it has for the last twelve years. Most of the participants are homeless, and many of them wheel all of their possessions inside the church with them because they have nowhere else to safely leave their belongings. Many of the performers have been coming here for years, and some of them are really good.

PARSON REDHEADS + ROBERT FRANCIS @ TROUBADOUR
April 7th, 2009 · No Comments
Parson Redheads filled the big stage like they’ve played it before, which is to be expected since they do a good share of touring throughout the year and they ARE a great live band. This was the first time I had seen them since they altered their lineup a bit, with three guitars, a slide, and four-vocal harmonies led by Evan Way. Aesthetically, the band misses Way’s sister keyboardist Erin (left to focus on acting) and her twisty tambourine playing, but musically they are still fun in the sun.
LE SWITCH: THE DEVIL NEEDS A COUGH DROP EP
March 31st, 2009 · 2 Comments
On Le Switch’s latest 3-song EP, The Devil Needs a Cough Drop, singer Aaron Kyle sounds like he could use one as well. Kyle sings with an extreme urgency—a vocal style that falls somewhere between Memphis soul and death metal. It’s a voice that can overwhelm a recording, but Le Switch has a tightness and a confidence that you would expect from a band that has been one of the best and most prolific live acts in the Silverlake scene.
