Thursday, March 3 – INTERNATIONAL SEX WORKERS RIGHTS DAY CELEBRATION – 8 PM
This year marks the tenth anniversary of celebrating March 3rd as International Sex Workers Rights Day. The Los Angeles chapter of Sex Workers Outreach Project (SWOP-LA) is bringing you a night of fun, film, and fabulosity to celebrate the growing movement for sex workers rights. We’ll kick it off with a sex toy fashion show and short film compilation. Our models will strut down the aisle with their favorite sex toys, working to dispel the myth that sex and pleasure should be considered dirty or shameful. We will screen short films made by sex workers and other SWOP chapters about the importance of sex worker rights locally in LA and globally. These films will inspire laughter, rage, hope, and an important conversation about sex workers in every community that happens all too rarely. Come enjoy the fight to champion sex workers rights as human rights! More info: http://swoplosangeles.wordpress.com

Saturday, March 5 – STUPID QUESTIONS: A SHORT FILM BY JESSIE KAHNWEILER – 7:30 and 8:30 PM
Stupid Questions is the story of Lucy, a feisty, young casting assistant trying to make it — even though she’s not quiet sure what “it” is. Terrified she’s on the fast track to becoming her single and bitter boss, Lucy decides to hold an open — and phony — casting call to find her dream guy. Surprisingly, Lucy actually falls for one of the studs from the audition and things become tricky. Is he genuinely interested in her or just using Lucy to advance his career? Will Lucy prove that you really can have it all? Staring hot tickets Zelda Williams and Ryan Carnes, Stupid Questions offers a unique perspective on what it’s like to be young, vibrant, and broke in a city that can either crush or nourish your dreams. Two screenings! 7:30 and 8:30 PM! FILMMAKER IN ATTENDANCE!

Sunday, March 6 – LA FILMFORUM PRESENTS HART OF LONDON – 7:30 PM
Filmforum is delighted to present the rarely-screened masterpiece Hart of London (1970, 16mm, color, sound, 79 min) by Canadian artist Jack Chambers. Perception is a sensory communication that occurs at a primary level between organisms; through the skin to the core and back through the skin again into the exterior world. Hart of London is that kind of film. “A landmark in Canadian avant-garde film, Jack Chambers’ magnum opus works and reworks the 1954 trapping and killing of a deer in downtown London, Ontario, until it comes to seem a grand metaphor for the destructive cost of civilization. The methodology recalls Brakhage, Bruce Conner, and Vertov—the film has a powerful brooding quality all its own.” – Jim Hoberman, Village Voice Full details at www.lafilmforum.org Contact: lafilmforum@yahoo.com.

Thursday, March 10 – OPEN SCREEN – 8 PM
Our quarterly cinematic free-for-all dares you to share your film with the feisty EPFC audience.
Any genre! Any style! New, old, work-in-progress! First come, first screened; one film per filmmaker; 10 minute maximum. DVD, VHS, mini-DV, DV-CAM, Super 8, 8mm, 16mm. FILMMAKERS GET IN FREE!

Friday, March 11 – THE UNION OF PROGRESSIVE IRANIANS PRESENTS TO SHOOT AN ELEPHANT – 7:30 PM
George Orwell defined a way of witnessing Asia that still remains valid. To Shoot An Elephant is an eyewitness account from Gaza Strip. December 27th, 2008, Operation Cast Lead. 21 days shooting elephants. This documentary shows urgent, insomniac, dirty, shuddering images from the only group of foreigners who decided and managed to stay embedded inside Gaza Strip ambulances, with Palestinian civilians. More info: http://toshootanelephant.com/

Saturday, March 12 – FILM JOURNEYS: MILLENNIUM MAMBO (TAIWAN) – 8 PM
A new monthly screening series and cine club highlighting emerging trends in contemporary world cinema, the film will be followed by open discussions that will consider the techniques and strategies used in each film. This month’s film is Millennium Mambo by director Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Set indoors and bathed in an unearthly neon blue, the film envisions Taiwan’s youth as being trapped in this world of immediate gratification yet unable to exert any kind of personal restraint. “Looking at the youthful friends around me, I find that their cycle and rhythm of ‘birth, age, illness and death’ are moving several times faster than those of my generation. This is particularly true of young girls: like flowers, they are fading almost immediately upon blooming. The process occurs in an instant. I do not remember who said this: ‘Of so many leaves drifting everywhere in the sky above us, there is but one leaf which comes to an eternal halt at the very moment of being, watching persistently by us with understanding and sympathy’. With this image in mind I hope to shoot a movie of the story of this youthful girl.” -- Hou Hsiao-Hsien

Thursday, March 17 – ISLAND FEVER PRESENTS HURRICANE MOTIONS – 8 PM
A collection of animated short films by young Puerto Rican artists, the screening will feature the works of stop motion animators and visual artists, Jose Quique Rivera and Daniela Swamp. Also screening will be short films from Y no Había Luz, an independent theater company from Puerto Rico that incorporates puppet making, masks, and other objects as forms of animation. Stop motion animators in the house! FILMMAKERS IN ATTENDANCE

Saturday, March 19 – INTRO TO FINAL CUT PRO – 1 – 5PM
Calling all interested adults (ages 20+) looking to learn the beauty and grace of digital editing! All equipment and materials provided by EPFC. Class limited to 9 students; tuition is $60/$50 members.

Sunday, March 20 – FILMFORUM PRESENTS COMPOSITE HISTORIES: THE FILMS OF CATHY LEE CRANE – 7:30 PM
Filmmaker Cathy Lee Crane visits from Ithaca NY with the first North American survey of her work. The four films span a decade of the filmmaker’s preoccupation with telling lyrical stories in dialogue with their European predecessors. More than mere adaptations, these films combine both staged and archival material, which simultaneously provoke and elide the friction between present and past. A self-avowed formalist, Crane’s conceptual concerns, rooted in the non-linear nature of history, are explored through the dynamic system of the frame and the cut. Through shooting on locations rife with historical, literary, or biographical valence, narrative density collides with the film’s own simple goals of telling one woman’s story. Full details at www.lafilmforum.org Contact us at lafilmforum@yahoo.com. FILMMAKER CATHY LEE CRANE IN ATTENDANCE!

Monday, March 21 – FILMMAKERS ALLIANCE – 8 PM
Join us for the latest crop of local indies hosted by Filmmakers Alliance and get inspired to greenlight yourself! FILMMAKERS IN ATTENDANCE! FREE! More info: www.filmmakersalliance.org

Thursday, March 24 – CINEMA INDIGENE PRESENTS: WATERBUSTER – 8 PM
EPFC presents the first film in a new screening series of contemporary Native cinema. In Waterbuster, old memories surface when the filmmaker, J. Carlos Peinado (Mandan/Hidatsa), revisits the upper Missouri River basin in North Dakota where his ancestors once lived. There he investigates the impact of the massive Garrison Dam project, constructed in the 1950s by the Army Corps of Engineers, which laid waste to a self-sufficient American Indian community, submerging 156,000 acres of fertile land, and ultimately displacing his family and the other people of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. Discussion to follow screening.

Friday, March 25 – WE HATE EVERYTHING INCLUDING THIS FILM SERIES – 8 PM
Disco sucks, punk rock is stupid, and nihilism is cool. A series showcasing a punk rock past that was never supposed to last. Some classics, some trash, all provocative. Begins with Blitzkrieg Bop (1978) a 50-minute music doc shot on early video cameras, and projected for you on a rare 16mm film print. Plus Red Italy (1979) Eric Mitchell’s Super 8 film starring Jennifer Miro (of the SF punk band The NUNS) projected on video, plus never before seen 1975 footage from an unfinished Tish and Snooky film long before they were the Manic Panic hair color moguls.

Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27 – BOLEX 16MM 3-D WORKSHOP – 1 – 5 PM
Learn about stereoscopic 3-D, and shoot your own 16mm 3-D film using Bolex cameras and vintage 3-D lenses from 1953. Class will include a history of 3-D cinema, camera operation, 3-D shooting techniques, hand processing, and 3-D projection. Limited to 10 students. All equipment and materials provided by EPFC and the LA 3-D Club. Instructor: Eric Kurland

Saturday, March 26 – THE STREETWISE CYCLE – 7:30 PM
The Streetwise Cycle is a multimedia fiction project by L.A. author Bronwyn Mauldin. It’s a series of nine interconnected stories – each exactly 999 words long -- offering a view of Los Angeles as seen by the people who sleep on its streets. The Streetwise Cycle is also a collection of photos, a podcast, a “prezi” and a website. Please join us on March 26 as we celebrate its first print edition with original music, performance and art inspired by the stories. More info: http://www.StreetwiseCycle.com

Thursday, March 31 – THE SOUND WE SEE: A LOS ANGELES CITY SYMPOHNY DVD RELEASE PARTY! – 8 PM
Please join us for the premiere of The Sound We See, the Fall 2010 EPFC Youth Filmmaking Project DVD. Three dozen students between the ages of 12 and 19 embarked on an epic 12-week adventure, creating a 24-hour portrait of Los Angeles on black and white 16mm film. The result is an exquisite cinematic symphony with live musical accompaniment that harkens back to the beginnings of film’s avant-garde tradition and shows the City of Angels in a whole new light. FILMMAKERS IN ATTENDANCE! DELICIOUS TREATS! FREE! EVERYONE WELCOME! DVDS FOR SALE (EACH STUDENT GETS ONE FREE)!

(Warpaint play the Zero Film Fest opening night tonight. This track from the self-released Exquisite Corpse EP)

The Zero Film Fest dissolves the traditional big-budget film festival in a puddle of battery acid and presents only the most durable surviving elements in a D.I.Y. setting. Organizers Rich and Brad sorted through 750 entries from all over the planet—including submissions from former Russian republics sent from warehouse warzones and Bolivian mystery men who wouldn’t provide real names—to create what could very possibly birth a healthy new era in local and truly independent filmmaking. The Zero Film Fest runs all this week and every night features some of the best bands—Warpaint, John Webster Johns, Restavrant, Glasser, Of Aire and more—of all kinds from all over the city. This interview by Nolan Knight.

How did this fest come about? Was there a specific event that triggered your idea for this?
Rich Hooban (curator and organizer): It was a couple of things. I knew I could do it because last year I kind of organized some film nights with just local filmmakers showing their films, getting a couple of bottles of wine, and everyone coming together, so it kind of emerged from that—that was like a warm-up practice. What really got the idea started were me and the associate producer of the festival, Brad—we both made films in 2007 just with credit cards. We didn’t go to film school; we just went out and made feature-length films. Then when we started sending to festivals, we saw that they weren’t geared towards—you know, the independent film festivals were showing films with thirty million dollar budgets—B-list Hollywood stuff. We just really knew that there was a big niche that wasn’t being covered, especially in Los Angeles, for true and genuine independent filmmakers and that’s why I started it.
Yeah, the term ‘independent cinema’ has become pretty exploited. What would be the ideal type of film that you’re hoping to come across?
We found a lot of good ones. What we were just looking for was somebody who wanted to do serious cinema. A lot of people submitted to the festival or entered their films for consideration and they were like, ‘Oh, I just went out with a DV camera and filmed with my friends in an afternoon. It was zero budget and we made a film.’ That wasn’t what we were looking for. I’ll talk about one film that I really respect. It’s by an Italian filmmaker who went over to Bolivia and shot this thirty-minute film that we are showing on opening night that is just a very spiritual film. It’s just out there. He used actors that refused to give their names—not even actors, just people that he was filming. It was just so real and so raw and that was one of my favorite films. I guess we were just looking for people that really wanted to go out and explore what cinema can be outside of the formula Hollywood film—not trying to imitate something that has already been done, but people wanting to explore that whole world of cinema.
There are no genre specifics? You guys are pretty much open to just passionate filmmaking?
Exactly. We said at the beginning that we wanted to show films from most creative urban centers around America and the world, so we gave different rates for international filmmakers just to try and get them to send their stuff and we succeeded in that. Really, we show everything under the sun from two-minute experimentals to feature documentaries—just all types.
Can you tell us a little about the venues you chose to screen the festival?
We didn’t want to have a typical festival so we’re just doing it in some warehouses downtown. Different places, just projecting on walls—this and that. We wanted to use the Echo Park Film Center, which is a small community theater. Actually in the past few days I’ve gone out with the associate producer and we started building a screen with nylon fabric that we got in the fashion district and PVC pipe to fasten the screen to—like, sixteen by nine. Even the venues themselves are DIY.
It seems like there is such a hodgepodge of films that are screening after each other every night. Is there a thematic element to each night?
Well, we have a horror showcase that goes every night starting at eleven. But in terms of just themes for the days, we didn’t really do that. We kind of matched up films where we felt the filmmakers had something in common. We put a couple of shorts before each feature and call it a showcase were people can be exposed to different things. Sometimes we put things together that didn’t belong just to show what is possible and what is out there. We didn’t want to be sucked too much into genre.
For future applicants, is there a time frame for when you guys are going to be accepting for next festival?
Yeah, we are going to start July 1st. Everybody involved with the festival is volunteering their time and the girl who does our website is actually out of New York right now—she does it in her spare time. In the beginning, when we were fighting to get the festival to happen all that we really had that was concrete—besides the passion to make it happen—was the website. We were like, ‘What is it, a couple of buffalo and some pictures?’ But yet we still managed to get 750 people from all over the world to send us their films. I was amazed by that and felt that it was indicative that, you know, it’s the right time and place for this festival to happen. It’s actually a huge response. People that I talked to would be like, ‘Oh, you’ll be lucky to get fifty films.’ I was volunteering at this festival called the Rooftop Film Festival in Brooklyn over the summer and I told everyone I had this rough idea of what I wanted to do and they said, ‘It’ll never happen’ or ‘People won’t submit to it’ or ‘Not in Los Angeles—the culture/interest is not there’. So for the first month that I committed to making this happen, I went on Myspace and individually requested filmmakers from all over and it turned out some really interesting things. I found a whole underground film crew that was living in some warehouses in the country of Georgia that was invaded by the Russians last summer and their films were really interesting. So I got them to send me files. You know, I met filmmakers that nobody’s ever heard of or thought to look for just by being up at night with a bottle of wine, clicking things on Myspace. I don’t know many other film festivals that do that.
You guys are also taking donations of equipment for future festivals—what would be the best way to get in contact with you for these donations?
A good way to get in contact for this is just send me an e-mail at info [at] zerofilmfest.com.
And what about the bands that are playing?
We’ve had a lot of support early on—I was talking to Danny Preston of Rainbow Arabia and he was like, ‘This is awesome—there are filmmakers living like bands do in Los Angeles.’ He was one of the early supporters and I definitely want to make sure that we mention him. And then bands like Restaurant were all about it. They weren’t like ‘Fuck you, what’s the venue’ or ‘Where will we play?’ They were like, ‘How can we get people to watch the films, too?’ That’s what gave me the idea of screening films before the bands play and trying to get everyone to come early and watch a film then have a good time celebrating. You know, there are some musicians who will just go out and play in the rain or in the L.A. River and then there are filmmakers who will just grab a camera and whatever they can get their hands on and just go out and do it. It’s really just about the passion and the community. The first night is gonna be really good. It’s in the Fight Club warehouse—actually where they filmed the movie. We’re showing this film called Buster and it was made by a female director from Brooklyn who will actually be in attendance with the actors and some other people involved with it. It’s kind of like the real Fight Club; it isn’t Brad Pitt with his shirt off or some bullshit. It’s shot on Super 8 and they developed it with Russian equipment and battery acid.
Shit.
Yeah, it’s dirty and amazing. It’s kind of fitting for the true independent people who are out there fighting, trying to break through Hollywood or whatever. I think it’s such a great metaphor.

Here is the list of bands and the schedule for the PAPER magazine 24-hour-store event starting at 6 PM on Fri., Nov. 7, at 8873 Sunset Blvd. Admission is free and the show is all ages! We will have a table selling a lot of local music and special limited-edition silkscreened posters of “classic” Vol. 1 covers for all the old heads in the house… look for where the property values seem lowest and that’s where we’ll be… also note that even though the bands don’t play for 24 hours the store will be open all night and all day and we will be there even during the darkest loneliest time of night, during which prices may be slashed just to attract human company. Our boredom is your savings!
