On this album, he’s pared down the Howling Hex lineup to just guitar, bass and his voice (though I swear there’s about two seconds of brushed snare and maybe a secret keyboard here and there). And while he keeps a bit of the border vibe, especially on the closer “A Game of Dice,” this thing sounds a lot like what a stoned cowboy might have recorded in that burned-out house near Albuquerque where Tuco got killed in Breaking Bad.

There’s something both exciting and familiar about this album’s sound, which hearkens to that period in the 80s where George Clinton and Zapp were making way for Prince, albeit with backward-masked sounding guitars and plenty of leftover hair metal vibe. This is the rock of party vans and melted 8-tracks.

Looking back, you might say that brothers Bobby, Dannis and David Hackney started as a ‘proto-punk’ band, but really this is pure punk rock made years before anyone else even touched the genre. Death seem absolutely sagelike in their prescience.
