PASSION PIT: WE’RE NOT METAL AT ALL
October 14th, 2009 · No Comments
Passion Pit is straight from glam-synth heaven. They’ve come a long way from the infamous Valentine’s Day mixtape to the release of their first full-length Manners, and they continue to sell out shows all over the world with their undeniably unique sound. Despite their busy schedule, drummer Nate Donmoyer was kind enough to spare a few minutes. This interview by Keldine Hull.
NEBULA: HEAVY PSYCH
September 3rd, 2009 · No Comments
Just like you can point to Nirvana’s Bleach and say “THAT was what Sub Pop sounded like,” someday I’ll point to Nebula’s Heavy Psych and tell an inquisitive great-niece that “THIS was Tee Pee Records!” Songs such as “Dream Submarine” shoot for the star-struck wizardry of Hawkwind and Amon Duul II, yet deceptively Satanic sounding songs like “Crown of Thorns” emulate the bombastic bluesy-ness of early Foghat and ZZ Top. And then Nebula pauses ever so slowly over some low power chords a la Sabbath and Pentagram before ripping into some blistering stoner-rock Deep Purple guitar licks.

MELLOWDRONE: ANGRY BEAR
July 25th, 2009 · 6 Comments
Mellowdrone’s latest Angry Bear is an album rich and thick with heavy lo-fi goodness. Bandmates Jonathan Bates on vox and bass, Tony DeMatteo on guitar and Brian Borg on drums have been going strong for about a decade with a few EPs and band member changes in between. Now with their second full-length, the trio has released their definitive album.
THE SPIRES: A WAY OF SEEING
July 14th, 2009 · 2 Comments
The album’s true gem “TAM” lifts off into a glorious anthem fit for any summertime mix—maybe tucked between Black Tambourine and some early Chills. “Lowercase” sparkles with handclap percussion over a dark bass line and “Everything at Once” showcases the band’s consistent command of pop sensibilities, while still remaining true to a wryly upbeat persona. The eight-minute closer—“All You People,” ends the album with a gentle nudge toward social responsibility: “You will surely be the tallest of the tall, if you take pity on the smallest of the small.” Let’s be honest—there’s enough sunshine on this album to dish out to the whole world but the Spires make you feel like they carefully composed every one of these songs especially for you.
MIDNIGHT: BALD BUT THAT’S NOT BY CHOICE
May 18th, 2009 · 1 Comment
Satan’s favorite party band is Midnight from Cleveland, who match the best parts of Venom and Motorhead with the sleazy visuals of the Mentors. They’re true members of the new black trash generation of bands—keeping the faith of rock ‘n’ roll metal and forsaking the trappings of over-technical playing and production. This interview by John Henry.
