Order Here

White Noise is ecstatic to release the brand-new split 12” with Primal Scream and RTX each kicking in exclusive covers recorded according to instant whim during the winter 2008 Primal Scream/RTX tour of the United Kingdom.

Primal Scream contribute their first new song since 2008’s Beautiful Future—a monstrous reading of the Troggs’ primordial “I Want You,” delivered here with Primal Scream’s usual masterful mix of classic technique from all ages and disciplines. (Feel that extra kick at the head of the riff!) Plenty of screaming guitar and Bobby’s vocals just about drip out of the bottom of the turntable—this one is gonna stick to you!

RTX (whose recent JJ Got Live RaTX is just about a California classic) peel out their first new recording since a killer split with Monotonix and it turns out to be Randy California’s (Spirit) brutally epic “Nature’s Way.” Jennifer Herrema and unflappable backers turn in a slinky version of the Sardonicus stand-out with fearless production (sax and vocoder) and an extended finale that demands to be played on repeat for at least twenty minutes per day.

Dub Club is an L.A. institution and now (after almost five years of filming) the documentary Return Of The Rub-A-Dub Style—which follows both the organizers of Dub Club and the long line of original reggae and dub stars they’ve brought to perform exclusive shows in L.A.—is about to release. Director Steve Henft (who has made videos for Primal Scream, Stone Roses, the Cure and more) and Dub Club mainstay Tom Chasteen speak before a special screening at tonight’s Dub Club. This interview by Nolan Knight.

What was the first record that hooked you into reggae and dub music?
Tom Chasteen (producer/Dub Club selector): The first thing that got me into reggae music was actually my parents. They went to Jamaica in the early seventies and brought back a bunch of records. They had the Harder They Come soundtrack and the Toots and the Maytals’ Funky Kingston album. Those were the first records to get me into reggae. The thing that got me into dub would probably be the Scientist albums. I bought those when I was a teenager—like Scientist Wins the World Cup, Scientist Versus the Space Invaders, a couple of those albums. That’s what really sold me on dub—listening to those. The word dub has a couple of different meanings. I guess the most frequent meaning of dub is—the Jamaican style—they’d make a 45, and on the A-side you’d have the vocal version of the song and on the B-side you’d have an instrumental of the same song but they would add a lot of effects to it—cutting the vocals in and out, making this psychedelic mix of it and that would be the ‘dub.’ That’s kind of the most concise explanation. Then rub-a-dub doesn’t have the same exact meaning. Rub-a-dub is more of this fixed style of Jamaican music that’s kind of in the era of the late sixties through the seventies into the mid-eighties. A slow and heavy kind of reggae that was really great for playing on these big outdoor sound systems and people toasting over.
The Dub Club has generated a huge response over the years—did it start off big or was it a gradual process?
TC: No, it started off pretty small. We have been doing it since 2000. It took a while to build. I would say the last five or six years it’s been a pretty big crowd—solid each week. It’s been a good crowd consistently for years and years. It took a while because I think there weren’t many other people doing this style of music. But we gradually found more and more people and then built from that following—people who liked the style of music and what we do. I think they appreciate that we bring in artists that are rarely seen or who haven’t been here before.
How did the documentary begin?
Steve Hanft (director): We started documenting the shows and then we realized that the Sound System shows in particular could be made into a film. We got excited about that but for me it was a new thing—even though it’s an old style of music that started in the sixties. For me, it was like, ‘Wow, people are rapping over beats back then?’ Basically, I was just excited about finding out about it. I think the first show we filmed was in 2004. We were shooting the rest of them up to a few months ago.
Were all the artists in the film readily available? Or did you have to go hunt some of them down in Jamaica?
SH: We definitely had to hunt those artists down for sure. Those guys at Dub Club—the selectors who book all the shows—they are digging so deep into the roots of reggae—getting the records, getting the artists. A lot of them came through one artist in particular—Tippa Lee, who’s actually a producer on the movie. He knows a lot of them. Tom would ask for some super old school artists and Tippa would know how to find them.
TC: In my experience, usually the artists were good to work with cause they really want to play and they are excited to come here and perform. A lot of these artists are great artists but they mainly play in Europe and they don’t play here very much. They still sound great. Usually they are just great to work with because they are excited that people still love their music. They’re excited that there is a young crowd here that knows their records.
SH: We really wanted an interview with Brigadier Jerry but he’s a real intense person. He was gonna do it and we went to the Twelve Tribes Church in Mount Washington—the Jamaican church were he is one of the founding members. And then he said, ‘No.’ [Laughs]
Can you tell us a little about the film’s soundtrack and where we can pick up a copy?
TC: It’s gonna come out in August and the DVD with the soundtrack will all be in one package together. A lot of the artists in the movie are on it but then there are others like Prince Jazzbo and Jimmy Riley—plus a lot of other great singers. We tracked the music here in L.A. but a lot of the vocals were recorded in Jamaica. It’s kind of just the tip of the iceberg. We have a lot of tracks that we’ve done over the years and they’re going to be out on Echodelic, which is our label. It’s kind of following the traditional Jamaican style where we have the Sound System—Echodelic Sound System—and Sound System kind of becomes the label, putting out its own records.
SH: [The DVD is] gonna come out right around the time of the screening. We’re in the process of building the DVD. The editing is done but we’re putting a lot of extras into it.
You was saying that the film will also be screened on the 15th—what does the club have in store for that night?
TC: We’re gonna screen the film at nine o’clock at the Echoplex and it will be free to come see the movie—free before nine-thirty. Then later that night we have a performance with Trinity, a classic seventies Jamaican DJ. We’re flying him in from Jamaica for that show. So we booked a performance with Trinity and Tippa Lee—and probably some other special guests will come out too.

RETURN OF THE RUB-A-DUB STYLE SCREENS WED., JULY 15, WITH TRINITY AND TIPPA LEE AT DUB CLUB AT THE ECHOPLEX, 1154 GLENDALE BLVD., ECHO PARK. SCREENING AT 9 PM / FREE BEFORE 9:30 PM / $10 AFTER / 21+. ATTHEECHO.COM. RETURN OF THE RUB-A-DUB STYLE DVD AND SOUNDTRACK WILL RELEASE THIS SUMMER ON ECHODELIC SOUND. MORE INFORMATION AT MYSPACE.COM/DUBCLUBLA.

“Let’s take a trip down Whittier Boulevard!” chant Thee Midniters, in Jon Wilkman’s beautiful love letter to the soulful sounds of So Cal. Narrated by Edward James Olmos, this lively and inspiring film explores more than fifty years in the musical history of East Los Angeles, America’s largest Mexican-American community. For decades, generations of East L.A. artists created a unique musical voice, and in the process, proudly expressed their cultural identity, from ’40s pachuco swing to ’50s teen idol Ritchie Valens, ’60s garage rock and soul, to punk and beyond. Chicano Rock! features the timeless music of these eras, including Lalo Guerrero, Ritchie Valens, Cannibal and the Headhunters, Thee Midniters, El Chicano, Tierra, Los Lobos, Ozomatli, and Alice Velasquez (The Bags, Cholita, Las Tres). Jam-packed with rare footage, photos, artifacts, Chicano Rock! treats you to an exhilarating lowrider cruise that could only happen on the streets of Los Angeles. Author Gene Aguilera (“The Golden Age of Chicano Rock ‘n Roll”) will be on-hand to spin classic 45s, and we’ve also got a post-screening live set by a very special seminal L.A. punk band!

British DJ extraordinaire Andy Votel will be in person at the Cinefamily to spin tunes and to present what is both a remarkable achievement in Hungarian pop culture and Eastern European film, starring some of the leading lights of both Communist era New Wave cinema and the forward-thinking Hungarian rock scene. Szép lányok, ne sírjatok! (aka Don’t Cry, Pretty Girls) stars Jaroslava Schallerova (fresh from her leading role in Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders) alongside Hungarian rock goddess Sarolta Zalatnay and a cast of freak-rock non-actors plucked from the disgruntled state-governed Qualiton and Pepita record label rosters to make this underhanded tribute to the ‘silenced’ pop group Illes, in disguise as a working-class drama/rock festival liberation expose. Directed by Marta Mészáros (wife of Hungarian New Wave luminary Miklós Jancsó) and featuring heavy footage of bands like Metro, Syrius and Omega (who can be heard on the recently released “Well Hung” compilation on Finders Keepers records), this buried and previously untranslated film holds serious appeal to fans of both Polish and Czech Cinema, Mod culture, Youth culture and obscure 70′s rock music.

They played The Ed Sullivan Show, were hand-picked by Paul McCartney to open for the Beatles, and then…gone. America’s Lost Band captures the essence of The Remains, one of the best of American rock bands you’ve never heard. The story follows guitarist Barry Tashian, keyboardist Billy Briggs, bassist Vern Miller and drummer Chip Damiani, the four young original members of The Remains, from their earliest beginnings to their all-too-early end, when they broke up on the brink of fame, right after opening for the Beatles’ last-ever tour in 1966. America’s Lost Band finds the heart of music that refuses to die, culminating in the band’s recent well-deserved rediscovery and reunion. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Michael Stich, producer Fred Cantor, Remains keyboardist Bill Briggs and Remains frontman Barry Tashian (who will also be on hand to sign copies of his book “Ticket To Ride”, as well as your Remains albums!), in addition to a live set by psych garage rockers The Living Sickness!

THUR., JULY 23 at 8 PM: It Came From Detroit

In a smashing, energetic presentation, It Came From Detroit lovingly puts on display the “Motor City”, home to an internationally renowned and influential garage rock scene. Starting with The Gories in the 1980s, the bands of the Detroit garage scene have been known for two things: an impeccable knowledge of rock history, and a raucous live show. As bands such as the White Stripes, The Von Bondies, and the Electric Six started to develop a following overseas, journalists everywhere started to hype Detroit as “the next Seattle”, and It Came From Detroit documents the evolution of this scene, from its humble underground beginnings to its ascension as a trend known the world over. And, perhaps most touchingly, the film deals as well with how the unexpected popularity of certain key bands impacts the scene’s small group of friends, as some are catapulted to global recognition, while others are barely known outside of Detroit’s crumbling confines. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director James R. Petix, plus a live set by special musical guests!

30+ years. 2000+ shows. No hits. No sleep. In 1976, a gang of kids from Queens stumbled upon some abandoned instruments in the basement of the house they were renting and ended up forming a band. Little did they realize that thirty years later, they’d still be struggling to play their music and pay the bills. The Fleshtones were an integral part of the ’70s NYC underground scene and, amazingly, having soldiered on as a paradox, simultaneously legendary and obscure: boasting a rabid worldwide fan base and a reputation as a white-hot live act, but barely able to keep a record label for two albums in a row and ignored in all histories of the scene they helped create. Stunning vintage footage, insight from Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Clem Burke (Blondie) and Handsome Dick Manitoba (The Dictators), and candid self-deprecating interviews with band members Peter Zaremba, Keith Streng, Bill Milhizer and Ken Fox add up to a thoroughly entertaining portrait of the real hardest-working garage band in show biz. The evening’s screening will be followed by a live set by special musical guests!

THUR., AUG. 6: Wesley Willis’s Joyrides and Haack…The King Of Techno

Despite impossible odds, self-proclaimed rock ‘n roll star and “Chicago City Artist” Wesley Willis became an underground rock icon, revered artist and hero to many before his untimely death in 2003. Through his force of personality, his drawing talents, his unique vocabulary and an incredibly focused and singular songwriting style, Wesley’s creativity attracted people from all walks of life, and helped him to overcome the daily torment of schizophrenia, a haunting condition which plagued him throughout his adult life. Directors Chris Bagley and Kim Shively spent five years on the road and at home with Willis (along withn his many family members, friends and collaborators) to create the definitive portrait of Wesley as prolific artist and musician, on his path from obscurity to fame–a journey which will leave you uplifted, tickled and adrenalized.

Bruce Haack was one of the most musically and lyrically inventive artists of the early electronic age, combining homemade analog synths, classical, country, pop and acid rock elements into one massive, heady stew. His craft evolved from his passion and creation of numerous kids’ records, and today his work has inspired the likes of world-renowned musicians such as Beck, the Beastie Boys and Mouse On Mars, proving he’s an almost-lost treasure ripe for rediscovery. Packed with warped visuals, wild music and far out stories, Haack follows the King of Techno as he drops in on “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” and golden-oldie game show host Garry Moore, playing his bizarre instruments such as the Peopleodian, a device played by touching peoples’ skin! Directed in true Haack spirit, for kids, adults and music fans alike, Philip Anagnos’ directorial debut will send you out humming “School For Robots” and scrambling for Haack’s records! Director Philip Anagnos will appear in person for a post-screening Q&A session!

I Need That Record! asks the simple question: why have over 3,000 independent record stores in the U.S. closed in the past decade? As much a cool history lesson on vinyl as a portrait of greedy record labels, media consolidation, homogenized radio, big box stores, e-commerce, shoddy “stars” pushed by big money and even the digital revolution, the film is, at its core, a loving tribute to the cherished nerdy record stores which for decades have nurtured our access to the music we all love. In addition to the exploration of its juicy premise, the film contains interviews with Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Ian MacKaye (Fugazi), Mike Watt (Minutemen), Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group), Chris Frantz (Talking Heads), Pat Carney (The Black Keys), composer Glenn Branca, authors Noam Chomsky and Legs McNeil, rock photographer Bob Gruen–and dozens of indie record stores across the U.S. of A.! The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Brendan Toller, a panel discussion (moderated by Michael Des Barres, featuring special guests) on the fate of the indie record store today, a Danny Benair Record Club listening party (bring a record to share if you want!), and a record swap on the Cinefamily outdoor patio!

THUR., AUG. 20 at 8 PM: ON/OFF: Mark Stewart from The Pop Group to The Maffia

This one’s a must for all post-punk junkies! The name of singer/industrial hip-hop pioneer Mark Stewart may not be instantly familiar, but his influence is felt the world over. From his early days with confrontational post-punk pioneers The Pop Group to his myriad collaborations with the likes of Trent Reznor, Massive Attack and Primal Scream, Stewart has provided ghostly beats and haunting vocals for over thirty years, and shows no signs of stopping. German filmmaker Tøni Schifer, who followed Stewart around for three years, has crafted a detailed, intimate portrait of the artist, supplemented by interviews with Stewart himself, his Pop Group co-horts Dan Catsis, Gareth Sager and John Waddington, Keith Levine (P.I.L.), Janine Rainforth (Maximum Joy), Douglas Hart (The Jesus & Mary Chain), Fritz Catlin (23 Skidoo), Daniel Miller (Mute Records), Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Massive Attack and many others, plus some terrific never-before-seen vintage performance footage. Plus, scenes of the wildly eccentric Stewart interacting with his mother are not to be missed! Straight from Berlin, director Tøni Schifer will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A!

The most unique comeback story of the year. Dennis Lambert was one of the most successful and diverse songwriter/producers of the ’70s and ’80s, with hits like “Ain’t No Woman (Like The One I’ve Got)”, “Rhinestone Cowboy”, “Don’t Pull Your Love”, “Baby Come Back” and “Night Shift”. He had chart-toppers in almost every genre of music–at one point, four of his songs were simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, a feat previously accomplished only by The Beatles. That was then. Today, he’s a 60-year-old family man selling real estate in Florida. But it turns out his obscure 1972 solo album is huge–in the Philippines. A Filipino concert promoter has been begging Dennis to tour for decades, and in 2007 he finally agreed. Of All The Things is a hilarious and touching pop/rock/country/R&B documentary that follows Dennis on his whirlwind tour, as he rediscovers his passion for music and thousands of fans he never knew he had. Some lives deserve an encore. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Dennis Lambert, his documentarian/son Jody Lambert, and some very special guests!

Before infomercials took over the late-night airwaves, overnight programming was a staid line-up of reruns, talk shows, and old movies. Throughout most of the ’80s however, there was one anarchic alternative—-Night Flight. Premiering on the fledgling USA Network on June 5, 1981–two months before MTV’s arrival—-Night Flight was a glorious amalgamation of music videos, short films, cartoons, interviews, concerts, and cult movies. For many viewers, it was a video primer to the counterculture of the Reagan era, featuring artists and films that at the time could not be seen anywhere else and for seven years, Night Flight was required viewing for stoners, punkers, headbangers, and insomniacs. Now, twenty years after the final episode was aired, the show’s producers have gone back into their video vaults and emerged with this best-of program that will bring tears of joy to fans’ sleep-deprived eyes, as well as a musical feature film picked from the Night Flight programming schedule archives! Night Flight creator Stuart Shapiro will appear in-person for a Q&A after the program!

Primal Scream had returned to rock through the back door, man. While on album they’ve made a few stumbles in this decade, somewhere around the second half of last Monday night’s set, their argument in favor of straight-ahead rock started to convince me a whole lot more. It was adorable seeing don’t-you-know-I’m-loco guys with big pants and ball caps going apeshit in the crowd, throwing up their hands in the devil-horn, hang-loose position, screaming “Get your rocks off!

Primal Scream’s show at Club Nokia wasn’t as safe and sterile as the metal detector at the door would suggest—it was full of musical savagery, literal violence, and strange rules of etiquette regarding who could get green wristbands and who couldn’t, and at what times Tony Presedo of Tee Pee records would acknowledge I existed. (Definitely not when young freckly girls were around.)
We missed the first band entirely. Parking at the venue meant $15, so we’d scammed around for street parking, then ambled slowly down the newly-condoed streets so my friend could chug two Fat Tires on the way—she wanted a nice buzz, but not at the exorbitant prices that fall within the shadows of the Staples Center. Once in front of the spanking-new Nokia Theater, we got our “VIP” tickets, a status albatross that meant we had to labor through a cheesy line of fellow schmucks, go through said metal detector, ride an elevator up to the Logan’s-Run-meets-Nawlins “VIP” room, where cruelly soundless TV monitors showed us the Brian Jonestown Massacre already in progress.
If the VIP lounge was like a retro Tomorrowland ride, seeing the BJM with Matt Hollywood and Joel on stage was a full-on flashback to shows I’ve only experienced via Dig and the hearsay of aging hipsters, albeit augmented by a few love-handles here and there. It was the real deal. The denim threads were a-flyin’, Stone Roses haircuts were a-flappin’, and eye contact was utterly avoided. Matt Hollywood still looked as pissed-off as he had the day he unplugged Anton’s mike at the Viper Room, though this time Anton was behaving himself. (To his bandmates, anyway, though not to us—his new song written “on a plane from Iceland” stunk like decade-old bong water in the sober light of day.)
Joel was in top form, though—he introduced one song as Matt Hollywood’s “big hit… an underage groupie song!” Some stupid young thing later was like “What is that tambourine guy about?” And I wanted to grab her by the scruff of the neck and shout, “What the fuck was Bez from Happy Mondays about? About fucking magic, you dumb bitch!” But that would be sexist, ageist, and beside the point—the BJM was overall pretty great, the only real tragedy being the relative sparseness of the crowd. Perhaps the 8:45 start time meant most of their fans were still out scoring dope.
Things were a lot more crowded and bizarre when Primal Scream took the stage. Techno laser beams jutted out from above at vision-correcting viscosity, whilst veteran rockers such as RTX’s Jennifer Herrema, former Pistol and DJ Steve Jones (with his harem of aluminum-hatted rasta crones tottering around confusedly) and Leighton Koizumi of the Morlocks looked on, over the heads of hipsters too young to remember when blending psyche with trance was still one of the many novel ideas Primal Scream somewhat spearheaded.
I don’t know if Primal Scream remembered that, either. They sprinkled their set with only a couple numbers showcasing the Orb-infused Can-tasity of Screamadelica, like sprigs of mint in an otherwise safe soufflé. Four-on-the-floor stompers from XTRMNTR and Riot City Blues left little room for the shimmering opiate dreams that once flooded a thousand chill rooms with good vibes. Just back from recording with the Queens of the Stone Age dude, Primal Scream came to L.A. to rock, rock, and rock, even on the more techno numbers.
Didn’t these Scot-pop idols still have something to teach us about the dubby sojourn through ecstasy’s Land of Truth? I found myself gazing back at the crowd, and became fixated on Leighton Koizumi’s eyes, the eyes of a man Bobbie Gillespie’s age who started the Morlocks around the time Primal Scream got going. Koizumi looked distracted—he himself lived through the Paisley Underground, spent years in prison on drug-related charges, and probably knew more about vintage Americana than any of Primal Scream’s Black Crowes chords could convey. Perhaps he wondered what might have been if Voxx Records’ Greg Shaw had pushed his protégés in the direction of Detroit techno instead of Downliners Sect.
Get your rocks off, honey!” I looked down at my stomping feet and realized my rocks were getting off, even in this sterile shrine to New Downtown. (Bet it looks like the Knitting Factory in five years.) A Chill Room this was not, but a good time it definitely was.
