NITE JEWEL: ONE SECOND OF LOVE
April 29th, 2012 · 1 Comment
Gonzalez may be a broken record, but the record broke at just the right place. This album could easily set an intimate mood for a night in with someone you’re laying some smooches on. Nite Jewel brings her usual frutopiatic groove, and it works as well as it ever has for her. By the time she wraps up with “Clive,” a slow and dreamy track, there is no question that Nite Jewel has a real talent for making the familiar just as enjoyable as it’s always been.

RUTHANN FRIEDMAN + LINDA PERHACS @ MCCABE’S GUITAR SHOP

Perhacs had taken us up to angelic heights, and it’s hard to compete with heaven—but Friedman seemed to think that it’s better to laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints.
NITE JEWEL: COMMUNICATE NATURE IN TECHNOLOGY
November 18th, 2010 · No Comments
The new Nite Jewel album is called Am I Real? It sounds very unreal or surreal, but perhaps it’s actually hyperreal, a new way of describing reality using knobs and dials and powerstrips in a way that’s dreamy and a little bit new age. This is how Ramona Gonzalez communes with technology. For her, it’s like being in nature, on a philosophical quest. This interview by Daiana Feuer.
NITE JEWEL + COLD CAVE @ THE ECHO
December 8th, 2009 · 4 Comments
My friend remarked that their sound reminded him of early “Being Boiled” Human League. The crowd was mesmerized and moved to dancing, no small feat in Los Angeles. Songs like “Love Comes Close” and “Cebe And Me” were broken down to their basic elements, delivered with an iceflow of synth-waves and just enough sunlight to cast a shadow The brevity of Cold Cave’s set definitely left you wanting more—not to be greedy. Their jubilant brand of gloom was fitting for an evening that brought the first winter rain.
NITE JEWEL + ABE VIGODA + BLUE JUNGLE @ THE SMELL
June 16th, 2009 · 5 Comments
Nite Jewel stands built of bass, drum machine and synths, converting the heat of the crowd into energy as they go nuclear without all the messier consequence of things like mutant babies. The rhythms and melodies here are vaguely Afro-Cuban; humid white man’s funk in a world of—at best—grey and at worst, light beige. Ramona Gonzalez’s and Emily Jane’s voices float over the fringes and their beats descend like visitors from planets much more interesting than this one.
CAVE: SPACE, OF COURSE, IS TIMELESS
May 27th, 2009 · No Comments
It’s nice, easy, and recommended for all folks to zone out with Cave’s 30-minute jams. If only the band’s MySpace page background could follow them around, spiraling neon colors out of sounds and frequencies, and so could we engage the ideal psychedelic lifestyle, in which a blink of an eye might transport us to an outer-space beach blanket with Sun Ra. This interview by Daiana Feuer.
