Ten years from now, the late ’00s may well be looked back upon as a golden era in electronic dance music. At the forefront are such overseas acts as England’s Hot Chip, Sweden’s the Knife and France’s Justice. It’s a movement flush with creativity in beats, sonic textures and (gasp!?) even lyrics. While much dance music is frustratingly monotonous and lacking in depth, an album like Hot Chip’s latest, Made in the Dark, offers as much substance for sober, stationary listeners as for those in the glow-stick set. At Hot Chip’s 2006 show at the Henry Fonda, the five friendly-looking lads hardly moved behind their synthesizers, yet the crowd danced like it was MTV’s The Grind circa 1994 (less freaking, though). Tonight’s show will follow an appearance at Coachella, but the Mayan’s dancefloor will certainly see its share of sweat.
