Every rainbow owes its existence to a rain cloud, and that dark space between the two is filled by Corridor’s music. As Corridor, Michael Quinn has recently released his second album, Real Late, with Manimal Vinyl. It’s heavy, intense stuff that wields a fine metal edge to reveal something beautiful. We sat him on the couch between L.A. RECORD’s Dan Collins and Daiana Feuer.

MP3: DREAM TAPES “HIDE AWAY” + PHOTO SHOOT
November 22nd, 2010 · 5 Comments
Dream Tapes is playing The Black Apples residency tonight at the Echo, so here’s a treat from them called “Hide Away.” This here is a ruff cut, says singer Estelle Raskin, of a new jam that’s a very catchy, sweet love song about wanting to keep your eyes closed. It’s a familiar feeling and the [...]
ASKA OFFERS FREE “LOVE TRANCE”
September 15th, 2010 · No Comments
It ain’t a free aura massage but Aska’s “Love Trance” comes close with its funky karmic collection of beats. It sounds like there’s a whip in there somewhere, maybe a dog bark and crystals being trailed by fingers. Sometimes Aska is hard to understand but there’s something magical about her always. This song is very [...]

VOICEsVOICEs: ORIGINS EP
March 15th, 2010 · 1 Comment
The masked dual vocal moans and chants and the furious beats and distortions add up to an aggressively beautiful sound that’s both calming and exciting at the same time. The new EP builds spectacularly from the blueprint of the first, with the addition of Prefuse 73′s production, a year of growing confidence and a bunch of new toys.
VOICEsVOICEs: IT’S A BIG EXPERIMENT FOR US
February 1st, 2010 · 2 Comments
VOICEsVOICEs might be like the middle of every great Led Zeppelin song, or maybe like Yoko Ono played backwards while in a warm cave. Their new EP—produced by Prefuse 73—is out now on Manimal Vinyl. This interview by Scott Schultz.

SISTER CRAYON + VOICES VOICES + CORRIDOR + MOONRATS @ THE ECHO
December 24th, 2009 · No Comments
This was the final Monday of Manimal’s 3-week December residency at the Echo. I arrived part-way through Sister Crayon’s set and was pleased to be there—it was cold outside! They sounded a bit like Portishead and they’re a fun band at which to look. There was a big guy wandering around the crowd, frequently remarking that they made his nipples hard.
WE ARE THE WORLD + RAINBOW ARABIA @ THE ECHO

We Are the World started their set on Monday in flowing white burkas, complete with capes and little square hats like the Shriners wear. I was trying to figure out how to describe their look (KKK-esque? Like whirling dervishes?) when Manimal’s Paul Beahan whispered into my ear: “it’s like Chef Boyardee on acid!” …Of course! Everything Manimal Vinyl does is like something-or-other on acid. Beahan’s label is the bulwark of left-coast psychedelia for the early 21st century—a new psychedelia that seems to be more influenced by raves and millennial tension than by drum circles and love-ins. Accordingly, the byword on this night was “mesmerizing.”
